On December 8, I commented on your post that "it’s no surprise to me that Sarah Palin’s popularity continues to rise. She speaks with the voice of most conservative Americans, and more nearly speaks for many moderates and independents than do the pimps and prostitutes sitting in Washington today. Though she may not be the ideal choice for candidacy, she is certainly an ideal choice for spokesperson, and the GOP establishment had better start paying heed to what she says. For if they don’t listen and respond, we’re going to find ourselves with a conservative “Tea Party” third party that will split GOP support and will result in 6 more years of what we have today. The GOP must become the party of Sarah Palin, else her supporters will go off on their own, and that will only spell disaster for this country."

A powerful and successful, well organized third party is the worst thing the conservative movement could do to this country. Do the math - with Democrats assured of at least 35% of the vote, there's only 65% left for the other 2 parties to share, and it's highly unlikely that a new start-up could garnish the majarity share of that portion. Thus the answer is exactly as you propose - the conservative movement must organize and rally within the established GOP structure to achieve success. Take a lesson from the Democrats who successfully moved that party to the left, and move the GOP to the right. Identify genuine conservative candidates and support them, work for them, and get them nominated, then run them on a slightly right of center platform (as Obama ran on a slightly left of center platform) and get them elected.

I, for one, am tired of bitching and am ready to get to work. The key, and in my mind the greatest challenge, is to identify a candidate who will leave his or her mainstream private sector job and subject his family to the abuses of politics, as you noted.

No third party for me, just control of the formerly conservative party that is already in place.
