A Potential 2012 Dark Horse?

This might be a little on the highbrow side, but if you’re really looking for somebody who has the ability to both fire up conservatives and present the country with a polished, articulate and principled leader, you might well consider Mike Pence as the GOP nominee in 2012.

This was Pence at Hillsdale College in September…

And here’s Pence and Jim DeMint on CNN yesterday…

I’ve been watching Pence for a while, now, and his speech at the Southern Leadership Conference completely sold me. Without a doubt, his Hillsdale College address was absolutely masterful and amply demonstrates he is the leader the country desperately needs.

Achieving a presidential nomination is usually an insurmountable slog for a congressman to manage, but if it can be done this is probably the year given (1) the antipathy to the same-old crowd in DC and (2) the inability of the frontrunners to galvanize the electorate.

Pence checks out on most of the motivating issues behind the traditional GOP and the Tea Party crowd. He’s a terrific speaker, he’s got some fire to him and he’s known as a guy who will go his own way beyond what the insiders want.

He’d have to come from behind, but it wouldn’t be a shock if he ended up being the guy who catches on in the 2012 race. And unlike the frontrunners in the race, Pence would wipe the floor with Obama were he the nominee.

I completely agree, Scott. While I hope Pence gives it a go, I also read somewhere – can’t remember where – that he may be thinking of running for Indiana’s governor’s mansion. He’s only fifty-one, so…

I want to get excited about Pence, but I just can’t manage it. To me, he always looks like he is trying too hard — doesn’t look natural.

I have to disagree with you, Ryan. His speech at the Southern Leadership Conference was fantastic – great and easy presence, excellent points seamlessly offered and plenty of humor. He wowed the crowd.

Pense & Demint are top notch pols. I think for the country they would be best where they are…in congress where they can make conservatives really effective.
At this time there is no alternate to Gov Plain. Imagine the govorment with her as TOTUS, ooops, POTUS and the mentioned as the back bone of congress.

Yeah, but Mike Pence was a radio host. I don’t think that’s credible to most people. (Better a radio host than a “community organizer”, but still…).
