Dardenne Ad Hammers Nungesser On Donations To Democrats

The 2011 Louisiana Lieutenant Governor campaign is officially off and running. We’ve got our first full-on attack ad.

The Dardenne campaign is launching this haymaker – which was actually uploaded to YouTube on Friday – in ripping Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser for having made campaign donations to lefty politicians like Barbara Boxer, Charlie Melancon, Mitch Landrieu and Mary Landrieu…

Is the criticism valid? Well, courtesy of OpenSecrets.org this is Nungesser’s federal election donation record…

Obviously, there are a lot more Republicans getting donations than Democrats. The donation to Boxer doesn’t show up in that search, though obviously the Dardenne camp found it somewhere.

Dardenne’s OpenSecrets.org search turns up a lot less money going out and a perhaps “cleaner” record seeing as though he’s never given money to Democrats…

DARDENNE, JAY

6/1/05 $250 Romero, Craig F (R)
DARDENNE, JOHN L JR
BATON ROUGE,LA 70809
STATE OF LOUISIANA 6/21/96 $250 McMains, F Charles Jr (R)

If you’re Dardenne you can look at these two donor records and ask why anybody is giving him a hard time about not being sufficiently conservative in comparison to Nungesser. Checks to Mitch and Mary and Charlie-Boy look a heck of a lot more RINO-esque than a few squishy votes in the state Senate when Mike Foster was the governor, so this is obviously an effort to seize the high ground on the Right. And in that respect the ad is a decent example of taking what’s available and using it.

But perhaps a valid retort could be made that Nungesser’s federal political donations, while perhaps a barometer of where one falls on the ideological spectrum, aren’t exactly relevant to the Lt. Governor’s race. And that question is one of the more interesting ones as the campaign takes shape.

After all, Nungesser hasn’t exactly restricted himself to the stated duties of the office he’s running for – as evidenced by the fact that of the five-point plan he put forth as a basis for his campaign the first four included…

  • Ensuring that the BP money is used to restore those affected by the oil spill.
  • Making sure the federal government expedites the permitting process and the EPA allows for a five year permit so the oil and gas industry – the backbone of Louisiana’s economy – is never shut down again and we can act responsibly to restore our coasts.
  • Protecting taxpayers so we can streamline government and reduce its costs to allow for true reform within our tax system.
  • Working to recruit new business and industry to Louisiana to create jobs and put people back to work.

That’s a pretty broad agenda, and it frames the campaign as being one for Bobby Jindal’s successor as governor rather than a rather unsung second-chair position in charge of culture and tourism as Dardenne has made a point of defining the office.

The ad seems like it attacks Nungesser on those broad lines he’s laid out. And in that respect it’s a good one. But does this mean Dardenne is going to engage Billy on that turf throughout the campaign?

If so, it’s an interesting development. Nungesser isn’t exactly the guy from Central Casting as the state’s ambassador; he’s the fat yat who dog-cusses the Coast Guard on TV. But Billy makes things happen and he’s a leader with charisma. Folks will vote for him if they have a reason to do it. So by opening things up to all kinds of issues that don’t specifically matter in the Lt. Governor’s race, like whether Billy gave money to Barbara Boxer, Dardenne is risking letting Nungesser out of the “bad fit for the Lt. Gov. job” box he might be able to keep him in.

Will Billy have a response to this one? Will the campaign evolve as a question of who’s a better governor-in-waiting rather than who can run culture and tourism?

Stay tuned. It’s just getting started.

UPDATE: A second search on Open Secrets finds this…

So he gave a max donation to Boxer when Chuck DeVore, Tom Campbell and Carly Fiorina were all at least contemplating running against her. Wow.

I was on the fence but not I’m with Dardenne. Giving money to Mary and Boxer is unforgivable when they had great Republican opponents. I can understand the Melancon and Mitch donations, somewhat, but they are also unforgivable.

I can understand donating money to RINO or even Liberal Republicans if you want access to speak with them about certain issues, but Barbara Boxer?

  3. Dave55552002 says:

I guess I’ll have to vote for Nungesser now unless Caroline decides to run for Lt. Governor. Billy’s father must be turning in his grave over the Boxer donation.

Boxer,Landrieu,Melancon; No way this guy gets my vote!

  7. Skydad says:

No way I’ll be voting for you, Billie.  You blew it!!!  Barbara Boxer????  Mary, Mitch, and Charlie are bad enough, but Barbara Boxer???  Why $2400 to that idiot from California?????

    • Gary Chauvin says:

In 2008 that idiot from California supported a flood protection program for Louisiana!!!  We need someone in office that is willing to do what is best for this great state, even if that means stepping outside of his party.

      • MacAoidh says:

That’s a legitimate reason, no doubt, but it’s depressing to think that something so basic as flood protection won’t be done unless politicians are bribed to do it.

And it’s not a slam on Nungesser that he’d be paying the bribe. It’s a bad commentary on the system that he’d feel he has to.

        • Anonymous says:

Well let me put my foot in my mouth and say…. I wonder if that certain ‘political campaign donation’ had anything to do with that certain ‘support’?  And that is a slam on Billie Boy… dang didn’t know my toenails had gotten so long……………..!

        • Nungesser pays people because he thinks its the only way to get what HE wants.  Nungesser pays money and gives out lucretive contracts because HE feels it gives HIM power, right Gary Chauvin?

      • Yeah, Gary, and just how have you and your businesses, legitimate or otherwise, benefited from the power that Nungesser pushes around?

That “idiot” from California also wanted to completely shut down drilling in the Gulf – which would hurt this state, and our parish.  Billy just does what’s best for him and people like you – no one else.

        • Anonymous says:

You are 100% correct, Thomas.  It would be one thing if that waste of human composite supported all 57 states but she/it doesn’t. She/It’s against drilling off Calif shores and our Gulf.  I haven’t checked but she/it probably doesn’t get any major support from the ‘Big Oil’ companies, therefore they don’t get her/it’s support. But when money talks, politicians walk and ole Billie Boy had her running.

      • Billy Smith says:

Gary, I can see why you support Billy.  Billy put his land in a trust and sold it to Plaquemines Parish Dirt and Clay, a corporation you and 6 other formed to be rewarded a non-bid of many millions of dollars that not only paid for the dirdy-dirt-pit in one joy but made you all owner instant millionairs over again.  You are just as dirty as Billy.  I would never vote for Billy again nor buy a tractor from you again.  You both stink.  You as a Republican support Billy’s position as supporting Democrats.  You are both idots.

        • Anonymous says:

          1. Again this is Gary Jr. my dad is a busy man, he doesn’t have time to look at websites like this.
          2. What is dirty about buying land and starting a successful business?
          3. Are you jealous because thats what it sounds like.  If not you really should clarify because some people might get the wrong impression.
          4. You said you would never buy a tractor from us again, well… i wanted to say thank you for your previous business. (Also thank you for voting for Mr. Billy.)
          5.  I like your first name even though i know its not your real one. Have some guts say who you are and mean what you say I do every message. (Gary Jr.) Show a little pride in your name.
P.S. I would love for whoever has something bad to say about me or my family to come and tell me that to my face, but hey thats just wishful thinking.
P.S.S. You might be the idiot my man… idiot is spelled with 2 i’s. Whats a “idots”?

  9. KarenG says:

Nungesser did what he needed to so he could help the people of Louisiana with flood protection.  It’s not a commentary on his politics.  Hell, he stepped outside his own political career to do what what necessary for Louisiana.  That takes guts.  He is a fighter that doesn’t play by the rules.  Better than the current guy we have.  He is weak and only cares about self preservation.

Nungesser gets my vote.  Time to retire Dardenne.

    • You’re right about that Karen, he’s a fighter that doesn’t play by the rules – that’s why he’s being investigated by the Feds for the crap he’s pulled and continues to pull with the residents of Plaquemines Parish.

And the fighting point – don’t piss off Nungesser, he’s going to attack you.  Seen it with my own eyes as he pushed an Oyster Fisherman who was seeking answers about the boat contract.  Watched him attack several women asking for levee protection on the eastbank – he had to be restrained by his “body guard”

The man is bat-sh!t crazy.  Wait until the debates – you ain’t seen nothign yet.

  10. Snowfarms says:

Every one of those donations can be traced back to an effort to better the state of Louisiana in the wake of one of the disasters.  An unabashed supporter of the people of Louisiana and an unflagging advocate for the economic recovery of the state, Nungesser seems to be exactly what is called for after this last term of pussyfooting by Dardenne.  What kind of a donation record does he have?  All republicans yes, but 6 donations amounting to less than $2000?  Weak.  What has he been doing with his time when those affected by the disasters and the economic downturn needed leadership?  Look at his record.  The answer is: collecting a paycheck and biding his time.  Nungesser is a man of action who gets results regardless of personal politics.  Louisiana needs a Lt. Governor like Nungesser, and dare I say it: a Governor.

    • Anonymous says:

I believe there are laws against ‘buying’ votes.  Not only does that make the receiver a crook but the one who gave the ‘gift’ a crook.

    • ha! ha! HA!  Better the state of Louisiana or Better the State of Billy Nungesser?  All evidence to the latter.  That money didn’t come from Nungesser, the majority of that money was given to Nungesser who in-turn gave to those Nungesser thought could help HIM.  And please explain to me how ending drilling off the Coast of Louisiana helps Louisiana or the rest of this country?  These aren’t donations, like Nungesser is doing something honorable or charitable – these are contributions – big difference.

    • Obvious Truth says:

“Pussyfooting?”   Nungesserfan is a paid campaign troll of the Billy Nungesser campaign, and an ineffective one to boot.

  11. Billy Smith says:

    Gary Jr., I
will tell you why buying land the way your dad did to start a successful
business was wrong.  Your dad didn’t just
buy land to start a successful business like the regular hard-working,  normal American.  Billy brought several of his political
supporters together to start PPD&C, including  your dad.
Billy purchased the land for 1.3 million, put it into a trust, then the
trust sold the land to PPD&C for 1.3 million.  Then Billy Nungesser gave PPD&C a non-bid
contract under his State of Emergency position for approximately 20 million.  It was all manipulated, like you dad did with
Billy by putting that big 40-plus high-speed boat with three outboards to work
for several thousands of dollars each day with BP (Sheriff Department).

Let’s see how the federal investigation turns out before taking this
matter any further.  By the time this is
over, your day may not know how to spell his, or your, names.

    As for my
name, it is Billy Smith, and I can assure you that you don’t want to meet
me.  However, if you do really want to
meet me, I will arrange that.  Then we
will see what kind of man you really are when I tell you to your face what kind
