If you’re going to run a primary race against John Boehner, you’re going to need to entertain the public and get free media attention for yourself – that’s how an insurgent campaign can win.
You’ve got to ridicule Boehner and play on his failings and shortcomings, so that those voters out there who are restless for change will get motivated to do something about it.
And that’s what this ad, by J.D. Winteregg – the Speaker’s opponent in the GOP primary for his Cincinnati-area House district – does brilliantly. It spoofs the Viagra and Cialis ads everybody’s tired of, insinuates that Boehner’s too old and lacking in virility and tears down his shell of invincibility. If you can ridicule someone, you can beat them.
We’re not suggesting Winteregg can beat Boehner. That would be a massive upset. But an ad like this can score points and generate traction. It’s great messaging – and it’s fun.
