From an American perspective, the economic rise of China over the last two generations has been staggering, and the modernization and introduction of market forces bringing that country out of primitive circumstances has been a demonstration of the power of capitalism.

The Chinese, of course, don’t see things quite that way. From a Chinese perspective the current advance is merely a return to the norm established over the course of four thousand years of civilization. China was established two thousand years prior to the birth of Christ and was the world’s dominant political power for the vast majority of that time until Western upstarts disrupted that dominance in recent years.
