We don’t need to do a lot of analysis here. The Zephyrs was a perfectly good name for the team, even though it was a carry-over from its previous home in Denver. In 1985 the team was named the Zephyrs – changed from previously being known as the Bears – after the famous passenger train. But the name was a fit in New Orleans, because the famous roller-coaster at the old Ponchartrain Beach amusement park in the city had been known as the Zephyr.
Not to mention Zephyr is a cool name.
The management of the team couldn’t leave that well enough alone, though, and insisted on a name change this year. And after cycling through a number of uninspiring-to-awful names, they settled on Baby Cakes.
Which has people all over New Orleans fuming.
