Mitch Landrieu’s and JBE’s New Plan To Fight Crime In New Orleans Is Every Bit Of A Joke As You Would Expect

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Governor John Bel Edwards have rolled out a new plan to fight crime in New Orleans. They have been coming under fire from Attorney General Jeff Landry for not addressing violence in the city.

What Landrieu and JBE came up with is a joke. The plan involves deploying 200 crime cameras all over the city, 100 new license plate readers, making Bourbon Street carless, and closing bars at 3 A.M.

From WWL-TV:

There will be more lighting in the French Quarter, much of Bourbon Street will be closed off to vehicular traffic during busy times, bars will be forced to close their doors at 3 a.m. and there will be additional crime deterrence measures in other ‘hot spots’ in the city as part of a $40 million plan to keep the city safer, it was announced Monday.

Governor John Bel Edwards, Mayor Mitch Landrieu along with law enforcement leaders announced the additional security measures at a press briefing Monday.

The move comes as the city prepares to host several major events in the coming weeks, including the NBA All-Star Game and Mardi Gras.

Edwards said that 173 additional uniformed State Police officers would be in the city for the All-Star weekend and 165 additional officers would be in town the next weekend prior to Mardi Gras.

This plan is a joke. The city is concentrating on keeping the French Quarter and tourist areas safe instead of actually going into the areas where the crime is concentrated. The areas where crime is concentrated in the city are poor black neighborhoods. If the NOPD actually stepped up its presence, Black Lives Matter would bitch.

There are some ideas that do have merit. The increase in the number of take-home cars might help. The increase in uniformed State Police is also helpful. But the state needs to go one step further as David Vitter suggested and create a State Police troop for Orleans Parish in order to have a permanent presence in the city.

Mitch Landrieu and JBE’s plan won’t #MakeNewOrleansSafeAgain, but it will give them a nice a PR moment until the next major incident.
