Darius Plummer, a 16 year-old from Baton Rouge, was killed Monday by 49 year-old Mexican national (?) Octavio Bringas.
Early in the afternoon, Plummer was visiting a friend in an apartment complex in the 4700 block of South Park Drive to celebrate his 16th birthday. His cousin, Derrick Ambrose, spoke with WBRZ, ABC’s Baton Rogue affiliate.
“His friend picked him up to go over there to celebrate and next thing you know, he’s on the floor,” Ambrose said.
Plummer’s birthday celebration went fatally wrong when Octavio Bringas, the alleged father of Plummer’s friend, shot him in the head. Bringas claimed he was playing with a gun when it fired. They were the only two in the apartment when it went off. Plummer’s friend returned to the room and found him lying in a pool of blood, with Bringas (or — “his father”) having fled the scene.
Meanwhile, Bringas was fleeing East on Interstate-10, toward Texas – and Mexico. He reportedly told a relative that he wasn’t coming back, and wouldn’t talk to police. The Louisiana State Police spotted his Mustang, conducted a traffic stop, and made the arrest.
“Louisiana State Police has a Fugitive Apprehension Task Force that works with other agencies in the state. We were contacted shortly after this murder. Our Fugitive Task Force alerted Troop D troopers that he may be in our traveling to Mexico. We located this vehicle near I-10 near La. 387. We made the traffic stop inside Lake Charles and he was apprehended with out incident,” Sgt. James Anderson, Troop D spokesman told KPLC, NBC’s Lake Charles affiliate.
Bringas is now in the East Baton Rouge Parish prison, awaiting trial facing a charge of second-degree murder. His bond is set at 500,000 dollars. The affidavit for his arrest shows that Bringas is an “undocumented person” living in the United States.
Darius Plummer was declared dead at the hospital, a few hours later. He leaves behind three brothers.
“I’ve been knowing him since he was a little baby. He’s an outgoing kid, always clowning, joking around, goofing off every now and then. And to hear this out the blue, it’s shocking,” said Ambrose.
