So says Newsweek, pinning the Comey demise on his statements regarding the Hillary Clinton e-mails…
FBI Director James Comey has been fired and like nearly everything in U.S. politics in recent years, it might be because of Hillary Clinton’s emails.
Authorities told the Washington Post and ProPublica that Comey misspoke last week when he told the Senate Judiciary Committee that Human Abedin, Clinton’s right-hand woman, regularly forwarded “hundreds and thousands” of classified emails to her husband, Anthony Weiner, to print out. Comey has “been terminated and removed from office,”
Comey’s account was true, but his details were reportedly off—Abedin didn’t regularly forward emails, they weren’t classified at the time, and there weren’t thousands of them. The FBI pushed back against these reports in a letter Tuesday afternoon, saying that it had found 12 email chains that contained secret information.
…and so says ABC News, which cites a host of griping from the Trump administration over Comey’s recent statements.
FBI Director James Comey has been fired, according to the White House.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump informed FBI Director James Comey that he has been terminated and removed from office,” the White House statement reads.
“President Trump acted based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions,” the statement said.
President Trump has previously been critical of Comey, suggesting that his actions helped Hillary Clinton during the campaign, while Clinton blamed Comey and his late announcement about the FBI’s investigation into her email server contributed to her electoral college loss.
“FBI Director Comey was the best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds! The phony Trump/Russia story was an excuse used by the Democrats as justification for losing the election. Perhaps Trump just ran a great campaign?” Trump wrote in two tweets on May 2.
It’s hard to feel sorry for Comey, whose tenure as FBI director came down, in our eyes, to a disastrous exchange with Rep. Trey Gowdy over the criminality, or in Comey’s opinion lack thereof, of Clinton’s clear violation of federal law on misuse of classified information.
