La. Tech Bulldogs Player Jacobi Boykins Ejected For This? [videos]

While all eyes may be on South Korea, a bizarre incident occurred in Louisiana Thursday night in the world of college basketball. On February 8, Louisiana Tech’s Bulldogs beat Charlotte’s 49ers 83-65. But that isn’t what upset sports fans or news outlets. One of La. Tech’s senior players, Jacobi Boykins, was fouled for and ejected from the game–wait for it– “dunking too hard.”

Sporting News describes the offense:

Early in the second half of the Bulldogs’ 83-65 win against the 49ers, La. Tech senior Jacobi Boykins was hit with what is undoubtedly, unequivocally, undeniably, unquestionably the most egregious, asinine, absurd, erroneous technical foul in the history of college, forget that, competitive basketball.

With about 15 minutes remaining in the second half, the 6-6 senior jumped a passing lane to make a steal then raced to the other end of the floor and threw down a thunderous, left-handed dunk from outside the semi-circle in the painted area of the lane. Boykins was whistled for a technical, his second of the game, and tossed from the contest.

You have to see it to be properly ticked off.

One sports commentator, Jason Capel, criticized the move, saying, “This is completely out of hand, what’s going on. You have to allow these players to play…You must be be allowed to show some sort of emotion. It’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun.”

Fans took to social media to comment on his fouls, expressing their amazement at the referees’ calls.

Austen Brown of Mid-major basketball madness described it as “ejected after not one, but two of the worst calls you will ever see.”

The site posted a poll, asking viewers which foul was worse:

La. Tech’s record at the time of this game was 15-10, 6-6 in Conference USA, and Boykins is the team’s third leading scorer. The Bulldogs won this game and lost their next game on Feb. 10 to Old Dominion.
