Looking around the Internet this morning, I stumbled across a story from realsimple.com in which so-called experts gave their opinion on methods they use to tell if someone is lying to them. Since we have a president that is well versed in the art of not telling the truth, I decided to see if we could use any of these methods on Obama to learn if they work.

The first tip, given by a retired FBI criminal profiler and a crime analyst, was this:

A Person’s Demeanor Or Voice Radically Changes

As an investigator, I first try to assess how someone normally speaks. To do that, I begin an interview by asking questions that I know the answers to, like “What’s your full name?” or “Where do you live?” Some folks are naturally animated and talk fast; others are more subdued. Once I know which type of talker a person is, I start asking him questions that I don’t know the answer to. If his manner shifts abruptly—going from calm to agitated or lively to mellow—chances are he’s not telling the truth.

It reminded me of how the president’s demeanor and voice changed at a few months back when he was speaking at the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Dinner, as he shifted his dialect relate to a black audience.

Watch this clip, especially toward the end when he instructed the crowd to “take off their bedroom slippers and put on their marchin’ shoes” and “stop complain’, stop grumblin’ and stop cryin’.” You decide:

The second tip, from a communications professor, was this:

A Person Avoids Saying “I”

In my research, I’ve discovered that when people fib about themselves, they tend to use I and me less often than people who are being truthful. Instead, they’ll speak about themselves in the third person (“This is a girl who loves to ski”) or even truncate their language (“Really into listening to jazz”)—anything to give themselves psychological distance from the lie.

Well Obama certainly passes this test. As this story attests, Obama said “I” and “me” about 1,200 times in 41 speeches. Maybe the professor wasn’t gauging fibbers who are narcissistic.

The third tip is from a high school teacher from Los Angeles, who says that people who are not telling the truth are know-it-alls:

A Person Has An Answer For Everything

Ask most people what they were doing last week and they’ll have to pause and think about it. That’s even more true of teenagers, who generally don’t have the capacity to tell an elaborate story on the fly. So when I call a child into my office and he seems totally rehearsed—there’s zero hesitation before he answers a question—well, that’s a dead giveaway.

Well, it does seem that our president always has an answer and those answers always seem to deviate from the truth. In this video, he manages to work in 16 lies in under three minutes. I didn’t count the lies and I’m skeptical. I have a hard time believing the number of fibs is that low:

Next, we have a relationship therapists who says that people who are lying generally have nervous habits:

A Person Fidgets And Fusses For No Reason

If someone keeps performing a random physical action that seems unnecessary—cleaning her glasses excessively, retying her shoelaces, or dusting off the (clean) table in front of her—she may be lying. The guilt and anxiety make her restless. That can be particularly true if she is lying to somebody she loves. When a person fibs to a traffic cop, she won’t necessarily fidget a lot. But if she is deceiving her husband, she won’t be able to sit still.

I can’t say that I’ve noticed Obama fidgeting, but he sure seems to stutter a lot when he is away from the teleprompter and sometimes in front of it:

Here is the last tip you can use to spot a fibber, which is given by the president of a company that trains law-enforcement investigators:

A Person Proclaims His Honesty Repeatedly

To sell us on the integrity of their answers, liars often use phrases emphasizing the validity of their statements, like “to tell the truth” and “to be perfectly honest.” These verbal tip-offs frequently invoke religion. Think of expressions like “I swear on a stack of Bibles” and “as God is my witness.” Most truthful people don’t need to go that far.

Now that you mention is, the president DOES use the phrases “to tell the truth” and “to be perfectly honest” a lot. Have you ever noticed this?

In this last video, shot when he was running for president the last time around, he crams seven lies into two minutes while talking about how transparent government would be once he was elected. We all know how that turned out. Do the people who are stupid enough to consider giving him a second term really believe he is being honest with them this time around?

It’s well documented by now that the president has trouble with the truth and we don’t really need these five tips to tell if he’s lying. There is always the sure-fired way to know.

You guesses it–see if his lips are moving.

Reps. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and André Carson (D-Ind.) will attend President Barack Obama’s White House iftar on Wednesday evening, the daily meal when Muslims break their fasts during the holy month of Ramadan.

The dinner will take place after sunset, in observance of Islamic custom.

Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, attended the White House iftar for the first time in 2007, when it was hosted by President George W. Bush.

“My favorite iftars are the ones with my family, but I also think that in a country with such diversity, there has been a tradition to honor all faiths, including Muslims,” Ellison said. “I recognize our constitutional separation of church and state, but at the same time, there’s nothing wrong with a holiday message or a holiday dinner.”

Carson, also Muslim, attended the White House dinner last year and said that although he enjoyed Bush’s iftar dinners in the past, he thinks Obama’s dinners have been more welcoming.

“I think President Obama’s approach is different, given his worldview and given his multicultural background. He recognizes that Muslims are an important constituency,” Carson said. “I think we’re moving in a better place … under leadership that is visionary enough not to ostracize.”

Now I hope this doesn’t come across as too smug, but I genuinely feel that there are some things that I could teach Obama about how to debate. As a member of the three time National Championship Louisiana State University Shreveport Debate Team, and the winner of quite a few trophies in the Professional Division (made up of coaches, college professors, lawyers, graduate students, lobbyists, and others), I am pretty well qualified to give him a few pointers.

First thing is first- raising the debt ceiling, and how to do it, is a Policy Debate. In academic debate, this means that a change in the status quo is being called for. It could be phrased as a resolution, as we call them: “We should raise the debt ceiling.” Obviously, Obama and the Democrats are the Affirmative Team.

So, what are the burdens of the Affirmative? First and most importantly, the Affirmative always has The Burden of Proof. This means that they have to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt that the resolution is the best choice. But how do you prove which choice is the best choice? Well, according to philosopher Immanuel Kant, the only way to tell if something is a good idea, is to put it into practice, basically meaning- you have to have a plan.

This is Obama’s biggest mistake- he has been trying to debate the resolution without providing a plan to be voted on. This happens in academic debate as well, and the most common excuse our opponents will give is that we have time constraints (only 3o min. of prep time before each round) and therefore not enough time to research and devise a plan. Unfortunately for Obama, he cannot use this excuse- this showdown has been looming for months, and he has a huge staff of so-called experts at his disposal, and hundreds of lawmakers, who could have submitted at least ONE plan by this time, to be voted on in the House or Senate.

Instead he has decided to do what many of my opponents do- vague promises, with no real direction. An example of this: in a tournament’s final round, I had opponent whose whole “plan” was reform. One word. Nothing else. As if he was Harry Potter and “reform” was a magic word that would make everything perfect. How can you vote on something that is not definite? Its like saying let’s vote on Health Care Reform, and not letting the judges know if you are talking about Obama Care, or the Republican Bill- how do you know whether or not it is acceptable unless you know exactly what is going to be done?

As of right now the only plan on the table is the “Cut, Cap & Balance” which has widespread support from the American people. So assuming that somehow Obama decides to read this and needs to know what to do next, here is the rest of how to win a policy debate: If Obama wants any chance of winning this debate (or re-election) he needs to step up to the plate and write his own plan. But just any old plan is not enough, there are burdens that the plan has to meet.

1. Show a Need

He has to prove to law makers, and the American people that there is a genuine need for a raise in the debt ceiling. And this may be hard when one looks at his own arguments just a few years ago in regards to President Bush requesting a (small) raise:

The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

So far, it seems that his best argument in favor of the raise, is scaring old people about not getting their Social Security checks, even though his administration is in charge of the Treasury Department, and would decide what bills and obligations would and wouldn’t get paid. Surely Obama would never allow his Treasury Secretary to withhold Social Security checks? Or tell him that it was okay to not pay members of the military? One would hope that it would be lawmakers much more substantial checks that would be delayed until a deal was reached, as well as the “advisers” who got us into this mess.

2. Get an Actual Plan

Seriously, a real one. Not a “promise” to cut unknown things “later”, not an “agreement” to some “fair” cuts to entitlement programs at some point in the future, and certainly not any vague call for over a TRILLION dollars in new taxes without any way of knowing exactly what taxes you will be raising, by how much, and who they will affect. Think back to Kant- how can you put any of that into practice in order to determine its value? How can think tanks, research firms, or even governmental agencies take that and run the figures to determine their impact on the American people and economy? They cannot. That is why there needs to be a real plan, written down, with numbers and dates, and real and binding words defining what will be done and how it will happen. Otherwise, it is like trying to follow a GPS that only says “turn” but doesn’t say when or in what direction- completely useless and confusing.

3. Prove Solvency

Solvency just means that the plan in question actually has to solve for the problems in the status quo. This is exactly why a plan must be specific, so that you can clearly demonstrate how it will fix our current situation. But… Obama told us already that kicking the problem of our nation’s spending problem down the road is not going to solve anything. He said we deserve better leadership than that. I, for once, am inclined to agree with him.

4. Prove Advantages through Cost Benefit Analysis

In order for a plan to be considered a good idea, it must be able to survive a Cost Benefit Analysis, or a CBA. All a CBA does, is weigh the costs of implementing the plan, with the benefits that solvency has shown will come of the plan. If the costs are greater than the benefits, the plan is a failure. Usually the Negative provides the costs to the plan, although Obama has given us a few already:

a. leadership failure

b. reliance on foreign countries

c. continuance of irresponsible fiscal practices

d. pushing the burden onto our children and grandchildren

So it is his burden to prove that he can overcome those significant costs to raising the debt ceiling, along with the other costs that will have to be determined based on what his plan actually calls for as far as cuts and taxes.

I have a considerable amount of doubt that this is possible, and as a voter, and therefore his judge in this policy debate, I would not be able to vote Affirmative. Obama loses for failing to meet his burdens as a debater, and most importantly, as a leader.
