Why ANY New Entitlement Program At This Point Is Unforgivable Stupidity

Posted on March 15th, 2010 by macaoidh

This from the Associated Press…
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — The retirement nest egg of an entire generation is stashed away in this small town along the Ohio River: $2.5 trillion in IOUs from the federal government, payable to the Social Security Administration.
It’s time to start cashing them in.

Is Big Economic Trouble Still Ahead?

Posted on March 12th, 2010 by macaoidh

If you pay any attention to the financial prognosticators and the economic sites, you’ve inevitably heard the talk about the possibility of a “double-dip recession.” The theory has a number of variants, one of which is that the minute consumer demand begins to rebound, all the money pumped into the economy by the fed will [...]

The Greeks, The Germans And Our Coming Conundrum

Posted on March 12th, 2010 by Mark Zelden

German news rarely notes more than a passing thought in the U.S. most news cycles.  However, with the debt brush fires flaring all around the European Union, recent German actions towards EU member Greece deserve some attention in the US.

The Latest Poison Pill In The Health Care Debate

Posted on March 12th, 2010 by macaoidh

It appears that if the House passes the Senate version of the Obamacare bill and it goes to the reconciliation process – which is unlikely both because the Democrats don’t currently have the votes in the House and also because it’s of dubious likelihood that there will be any reconciliation at all once President Obama [...]

The Decomposition of Banking

Posted on March 11th, 2010 by macaoidh

by C. Ward Bond
Thirty five years ago, Embree Easterly, president of Capital Bank and Trust of Baton Rouge, fought a losing battle for the preservation of banking integrity while he was the leader of the Independent Banker’s Association of Louisiana.

FedEx Breathing Easier In Fight Against UPS, Teamsters, Pelosi – Maybe

Posted on March 11th, 2010 by macaoidh

Back in January, we posted an update on the lobbying war between FedEx and UPS over the question of regulating the former under the National Labor Relations Act as opposed to the Railway Labor Act it currently falls under. Developments this week merit a progress report on the fight.

You Didn’t Really Expect Obama To Allow Offshore Drilling, Did You?

Posted on March 11th, 2010 by macaoidh

Don Briggs’ piece yesterday on the Davy Jones gas find off Louisiana’s southwest coast is certainly a hopeful one. McMoran’s discovery of between 2-6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas with one exploratory well has opened up speculation that there may be a vast trend of oil and gas running offshore from the Davy Jones [...]

Is Recreational Fishing Obama’s Next Targeted Villain?

Posted on March 9th, 2010 by macaoidh

This one is so off-the-wall stupid we’re struggling to believe it’s even possible. But apparently it’s legitimate – the Obama administration could be on the verge of imposing a ban of some sort on recreational fishing.
That’s correct. Fishing.

Scalise, Fleming, La. House To Waxman, Markey: Go Away And Leave Us Alone

Posted on March 8th, 2010 by macaoidh

While the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce awaits responses to letters it sent to natural gas producers as a precursor to hearings later this month on whether federal regulation is warranted on hydraulic fracturing, Louisiana’s congressional delegation and state legislators are taking a very vigorous and aggressive stance in fighting Washington’s attempts to [...]

Relax And Take A Deep Breath

Posted on March 5th, 2010 by dan juneau

When things get overwhelming, we often seek to get back to the basics and simplify. This is a particularly good idea in the midst of the current climate change/global warming debate. For most of us, it’s been a very long time since we sat in a science class. Perhaps a refresher course [...]
