BATON ROUGE – At a banquet in Metairie on Tuesday night, August 29, the Louisiana Freedom Caucus PAC (LAFCPAC) announced the endorsements of 37 candidates for legislative offices in Louisiana’s upcoming primary elections October 14. It’s the first set of endorsements, with another set to come in advance of the November 18 general elections.
The Louisiana Freedom Caucus PAC is an organization created to support the Louisiana Freedom Caucus, a new entity devoted to conservative principles and their application in the state legislature. Its endorsements are aimed at providing a slate of potential new recruits to the current Freedom Caucus membership following this legislative cycle, so that the Freedom Caucus might become the most powerful bloc of legislators in both houses at the State Capitol.
“These men and women, endorsed by the Louisiana Freedom Caucus PAC, because of their commitment to freedom, individual liberty and smaller government, represent the biggest step in my lifetime toward moving us in the right direction. Louisiana has been held back by bad government for 100 years. If we are going to change course and start catching up with other southern states, it has to start with electing the right people,” said Louisiana Freedom Caucus Chairman Alan Seabaugh, LAFCPAC’s endorsee in Senate District 31.
LAFCPAC board member Derek Babcock, who is also the Secretary of the Republican Party of Louisiana, echoed Seabaugh’s sentiments.
“Louisiana isn’t a poor state, we’ve just been poorly managed. Our endorsed candidates are the right choices to lead the charge for common sense policies that will improve education for our children, encourage business to grow and prosper in Louisiana, and to stop the outward migration of our citizens. We’ve seen the last four years that having a Republican majority in the House and Senate isn’t enough, we need a CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY and we’re proud to endorse these candidates to fill that role,” said Babcock.
“Our endorsees are a group of proven conservative leaders who will lead the revival of Louisiana from its current economic morass back to the prosperity our people so richly deserve,” said fellow LAFCPAC board member Barry Hugghins.
LAFCPAC used several criteria as the basis for its endorsements, but where incumbents were concerned only the 19 members of the House of Representatives who voted against breaking the constitutional spending caps in this past regular legislative session were eligible for endorsement. All other current members of the Louisiana legislature were ineligible based on that bright-line test, which had been signaled by both the PAC and the Freedom Caucus during the session.
“What we found during our candidate calls was the same thing we found when we polled Louisiana voters this spring,” said LAFCPAC director Scott McKay. “There is a groundswell in Louisiana which is building toward this fall’s elections. Our people have a yearning for principled conservative leadership and an appetite for significant, palpable reforms along the lines of what many of our neighboring states have done while we’ve wasted the past eight years with John Bel Edwards and his Republican sycophants in legislative leadership enforcing mediocrity and worse upon us. We believe our endorsees will empower our legislature to act on those desires of our people and pushes Louisiana to catch up to the rest of the South.”
