According to a report at CQPolitics.com today, Louisiana’s senior Senator Mary Landrieu has been busy cutting checks to help the fortunes of sagging Democrats around the country.
Specifically, Landrieu has been pushing money from her political action committee to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who received two checks totalling $10,000 from Landrieu in September. And while a planned fundraiser for Reid in New Orleans fell through as a result of considerable controversy and protest locally – and the perceived negative effect on Mary’s brother Mitch’s upcoming campaign for mayor of the Big Easy – Landrieu managed to fork over a $5,000 donation to the Nevada Democrat Party on Dec. 22.
The checks from Landrieu’s PAC didn’t stop there. Landrieu sent $10,000 to Sen. Blanche Lincoln’s moribund campaign in September, and she also shot off $10,000 to Charlie Melancon’s senatorial campaign.
None of Landrieu’s recipients appear to have much chance of winning as of right now. Reid is running 9-12 points behind Republican challengers Sue Lowden or Danny Tarkanian, Lincoln is in double-figure deficits behind any of her prospective GOP opponents, and Melancon looks like a dead duck against David Vitter this fall.
