Not 100% Certain: McAllister Won’t Rule Out Political Future

After resigning from the U.S. Congress and being dubbed “Louisiana’s Smooching Congressman” for making out with his District Staffer Melissa Peacock on leaked surveillance footage, Rep. Vance McAllister (R-LA) says he is not entirely ruling out running for election in the future.

As reported, McAllister made an appearance in Central Louisiana where he told the Town Talk that he was not planning on running for re-election this year in the state’s 5th congressional district, but he was also no completely closing the door on future political aspirations.

“I can tell you my intent is not to run for re-election,” McAllister said. “To say I’m 100 percent sure, I would never box myself in like that.”

The primary election for Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District is Nov. 4. McAllister did sound open to running for public office sometime in the future, even if he does not seek re-election to the congressional seat.

“I’ve said all along, it will be the people’s choice what I do in the future, as long as it’s right for my family,” he said. “I have a whole new respect for public service, both good and bad, and I have to say the good outweighs the bad. It’s up to the voters to forgive me in any race in the future.”

“I’m behind him 100 percent in whatever decision he makes, and I’ll continue to be behind him,” Kelly McAllister said.

The news comes just after McAllister said last month, after being told by just about everyone to resign, including Louisiana Republican Party Chairman Roger Villere, that he would not be running for re-election.

Villere, according to sources got into a major dispute with McAllister’s Chief of Staff Adam Terry for demanding a resignation, with Terry threatening to expose misbehavior of other members of the Louisiana congressional delegation.

McAllister said he has received an overwhelming amount of support from residents in the 5th congressional district and said he plans to “work my butt off.”

As he told Chamber members, “I don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring, but today I’m your congressman, and I’m going to work my butt off.”

“There’s a lot of stuff that needs to be done,” McAllister said. “A lot of people still need representation. I’m going to work twice as hard as long as I’m in the people’s seat.”

Though McAllister, at the time, said the smooch with Peacock was his only encounter with her, he had reportedly told his wife back in January that he was having an affair. And, McAllister, according to sources, was known in Washington as a congressman who hated his job, but loved the party-perks that came with it.

McAllister won the special election against Neil Riser as a political outsider who had the backing of the Duck Dynasty super-star family, the Robertsons, after former Congressman Rodney Alexander retired from the seat to take over as Gov. Jindal’s Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs.

Questions regarding the scandal, like who leaked the footage, why did the Ouachita Citizen obtain it and was the footage leak a calculated attack by a political opponent have gone unanswered.
