That’s about the only you can look at the Special Session call he issued late this evening. Also, the timing of the Friday before Mardi Gras is very interesting.
Governor John Bel Edwards essentially took the letter sent today from State Rep. Lance Harris (R-Alexandria) and State Sen. Danny Martiny (R-Kenner) and tossed it in the trash. There are no items in there related to addressing the cost of government. Instead, there are plenty of items in the call to raid the BP oil spill fund and raise taxes on everything and everyone.
Among the tax hikes Edwards put on the table are:
- Income tax hikes
- Cigarette tax hikes
- Sales tax hikes on leased property and some services
- Business utility tax hikes
- Alcohol tax hikes
- Taxes on AirBnB and anyone else who rents out a spare room
- Taxes on the oil and gas industry
Bend over Louisiana, John Bel wants your money. Besides, people need to be paid off just like in the good ol’ days.
There won’t be any shared sacrifice for state agencies and government entities. The only people expected to sacrifice are Louisiana taxpayers.
Hopefully the Louisiana House will defy John Bel again and force him to make real cuts to state government.
