The protests over the Alton Sterling shooting in Baton Rouge have taken a more combative turn tonight. For the first time since they began, protesters have blocked Airline Highway in front of Baton Rouge Police Headquarters.

They’re being confronted by a mixed force of Baton Rouge police and Louisiana State Police armed with riot shields and batons.

The scene is getting extremely tense and police have already had to force the crowd back. Agitators in the crowd are obviously trying to force a violent confrontation with police.

Meanwhile volunteers, both white and black, are handing out water to the protesters.
