MARSH MAN MASSON: BLAST on the BEACH As The Speckled Trout Arrive!

The speckled trout have arrived on Louisiana’s beaches, and the action resembles that of the good ol’ days.

Chris Macaluso and I had no idea what was in store for us Wednesday when we made the journey down a winding Highway 23, deep into the heart of Plaquemines Parish, for an overnight stay at one of Louisiana’s historical treasures, Woodland Plantation.

Restored and renovated in the late 1990s by Foster Creppel, Woodland was once the grand home of Capt. William Johnson, who ran a thriving sugar-cane operation on the property nearly 200 years ago. Today, it’s a glorious bed-and-breakfast that caters to history buffs who travel from around the world to eat better than kings and contemplate the lives and stories that ooze from every corner of the place.

Being located at the hub of some of the best fishing in North America, Woodland also outfits anglers, and that’s what brought Macaluso and me.

After a brief social gathering, Creppel escorted all of his guests to ponds at the rear of the property, where wild alligators have become his pets. He brought along chicken leg quarters and stale hamburgers, and the giant reptiles gobbled them with gusto, much to the delight of the crowd.

We then retired to a restored church on the grounds called Spirits Hall, where a five-course meal awaited us. We feasted on corn-and-crab bisque and seared wahoo with crawfish cream sauce before turning in for the night in anticipation of the next day’s action.

It would end up being far better than even our most outlandish dreams.

Macaluso and I fished with Capt. Eddie Adams, a legendary angler about whom I’d heard much but never met. The three of us hit it off instantly, and Adams (http://louisianaredfishmaster.com) toted us on his big Majek bay boat to the beaches on the west side of the parish, out of Empire’s Delta Marina.

We began catching keeper speckled trout on our first casts, and didn’t stop until we each had our limits. The fishing somehow matched the incredible accommodations at Woodland.
