Shawn Wilson Might Be The Worst Candidate We’ve Ever Seen. Really.

This morning the Republican Governor’s Association put out a press release just crushing Shawn Wilson, the former head of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development now trying to win election as Louisiana’s governor, for his job performance at DOTD.

It’s not a hard assignment for the RGA. Or maybe it is – you have so many data points to pick from in making your argument.

Anyway, here’s what the RGA had to say…

Former Louisiana Secretary of Transportation and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Shawn Wilson has consistently said he’d be running on his record in the Louisiana Governor’s race this year, saying he would run the state just like he ran the DOTD.

As Louisianans are well aware, Louisiana ranks 49th in the country for infrastructure, dropping 10 spots on the list under Shawn Wilson’s leadership.

What’s worse, Wilson seems to think this is success, citing Louisiana’s infrastructure grade going from a D- to a D+ in the years he was in charge of Louisiana’s roads and bridges.

Absolutely absurd, we know, but take a look for yourself here.

“I say this all the time, when they said Louisiana got a failing grade, well Louisiana had a D- when I became Secretary, it was a D- before, it’s a D+ now.” – Shawn Wilson

“Louisiana deserves far better than Shawn Wilson’s disastrous leadership. After nearly 20 years of Shawn Wilson at the Department of Transportation, Louisiana went from a D- to a D+. If that’s his report card as DOTD director, just imagine what the state would look like with Wilson as governor.” – Courtney Alexander, RGA National Press Secretary

Here’s the video the release talks about…

He doesn’t seem like a bad guy, but dude.

Running around demanding to get to run the whole state when you have a D-plus in your current job as a bureaucrat is such a hard sell. It’s comical, actually. And the music behind that video clip the RGA has is allllmost right.

Might have needed this instead…

We’re told there are more clips like this of Wilson on the campaign trail out there. We kind of hope not. This is cringe enough.

Because the thing is, it’s not about D-minuses or D-pluses. It’s about turning medians of major surface streets into snake farms. It’s about failing for four years to complete a pair of flyover ramps between I-10 and the New Orleans airport. It’s about dithering for eight years in getting the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles fixed, and then demanding tolls on it at a time when the state’s budget was doubling on the watch of the administration you served.

Basically, the value proposition we’re seeing from Wilson is that he’s got the right to fail up.

At least, so far, there isn’t a race card associated with that. Thank goodness, and thank Shawn Wilson for that.

But it’s still pretty amazing. You would think Wilson would have made sure to lock down at least one major accomplishment – finishing SOMETHING – so he could say “Hey, I got this done and I can do more as your governor.”

But “Hey, I’m a D-plus,” and “What more do you want from me?” just comes off as out of touch. It comes off as a middle finger to the public.

Like we don’t deserve better than that, and we’re bad people for asking.

Wilson is going to make the runoff for demographic and partisan reasons, but so far, objectively speaking, his is the worst of the gubernatorial campaigns we’ve seen. It’s amazing how bad the Louisiana Democrat Party has become.
