Spring is the season when crappie invade the shallows like soldiers making a beach landing, and it’s also the only time of year I target these fish.
Technically, it’s not spring yet, but the run always kicks off early here in South Louisiana, so February can be absolute prime time.
I was hoping it would be this weekend when I took my son Joel onto the Tchefuncte River near our house. We like catching these fish, and like everyone who has ever tasted them, we absolutely LOVE eating them.
So we set out with a bag full of Bobby Garlands, and finally settled on a style the fish really wanted (purchase here: https://amzn.to/3SYINc8). The hot technique was to simply cast the lure out, let it settle to the bottom and retrieve it slowly.

The fish were absolutely TAGGING the bait, and although we certainly caught some small ones, the technique delivered the biggest crappie of my life, a fish measuring almost 16 inches. Check out the video for all the details!
