BRIGGS: Trump Administration Prioritizes Gulf of America Energy & New US Energy Czar

Within days of taking office, the new Trump Administration is laying the groundwork for a resurgence of energy production and generation from the Gulf of America states in the United States. Early executive orders during the first days of President Donald Trump’s second term tackle serious federal reforms needed to prioritize America’s energy dominance.

The American Petroleum Institute (API), where I work to represent the Gulf Coast region, supports a 5-point policy roadmap on the national level to protect consumer choice, bolster geopolitical strength, leverage natural resources, reform permitting systems, and advance sensible tax policy. These five steps will bolster American energy dominance and put America back on the front lines of energy production. Many of President Trump’s first executive orders take action to achieve these steps.

First, an executive order was recently signed by the new Administration on Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), which stated that all applications relating to LNG production would be considered by the Secretary of Energy to kickstart production. It is vital that as much production of LNG and other natural gas products as possible can be done here at home. In fact, API found that 89 percent of Americans agree that producing oil and natural gas in America makes our country more secure against the whims of hostile adversaries.

Second, in the Unleashing American Energy Executive Order President Trump revoked the electric vehicle mandate and reaffirmed that the production of the EVs will be completed in a free market that gives the American consumer the right to choose the vehicle that best meets their needs.

Finally, as we look to the future, our Gulf of America production has already grown steadily from 1.9 to two million barrels per day over the last year. Similarly, our shale production increased in the United States from five million to 13.5 million barrels per day. In the future, we know we can keep this momentum going by streamlining the permitting for electric plants, transmission lines, pipelines and distribution systems, while continuing to focus on US energy dominance that will not subject us to dependence on other countries like China.

We are encouraged by the US Senate’s recent action to confirm former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as the US Secretary of the Interior and the “White House Energy Czar.” We look forward to continuing to work with the new Trump Administration on all the policies outlined above, and along with Secretary Burgum, as we promote policies that put the Gulf of America’s energy production at the forefront of the national agenda in Washington, DC.
