Your initial reaction might be suspicion, as in “here come a bunch of woke Yankees saying Tiger Stadium isn’t safe to sit in.” If so, relax – this video, put together by the Constructify YouTube channel and released over the weekend, is complimentary in the extreme.
“Most terrifying” means Tiger Stadium’s reputation for being awfully difficult to play in for visiting teams, not that it’s falling apart or anything.
In fact, Constructify’s episode on Death Valley is even complimentary about the seedy history of the stadium – namely, Huey Long’s scheme to use LSU’s general fund and its housing budget to finance the enclosure of the South End Zone by building dorms under the bleachers. That’s actually something most of us think was a lousy thing to do – those dorms were abominable, and they’re no longer used other than for storage, and now they stand as something akin to monuments to lawless and slipshod politics.
But Constructify seems to have gotten a kick out of Long’s creativity, and they do a great job tracing the 100-year history of the stadium’s construction and development.
Not to mention the 1988 Earthquake Game when crowd noise lit up the seismometer on campus after Tommy Hodson hit Eddie Fuller for the last-minute game-winning touchdown to beat Auburn.
It’s a cool video for LSU fans, especially to see what out-of-towners think of our architectural marvel by the Mississippi.
Is Tiger Stadium the state’s most iconic building? Maybe it is. Maybe it’s the Superdome or St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, or maybe it’s the State Capitol.
Hopefully it isn’t the State Capitol. Not that factory of sadness.
Anyway, if you’re looking for 12 minutes of somebody saying something complimentary of Louisiana, this is new, and it’s fresh, and it’s for you.
