Could Clay Higgins Be The Next Chair Of The House Homeland Security Committee?

It’s certainly possible, according to a report from the Daily Signal, which listed Higgins as one of four candidates to replace outgoing Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green.

Here’s what the Daily Signal report had to say about Higgins…

Clay Higgins of Louisiana

Higgins, who currently serves a reserve law enforcement officer, thinks he has the passion it takes to lead the committee.

“I am pursuing the Homeland Security Chair position, and I have been respectfully engaging with colleagues to discuss this effort and earn their support,” he said in a statement.

“My experience as a law enforcement officer, an Army veteran, and nine years as a member of the committee provides deep expertise in the homeland security threat environment. I am fully prepared to continue the committee’s important work and deliver on policies that ensure the safety and security of the American people.”

Higgins, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, went viral in the 2010s—before his time in Congress—for videos of him warning criminals to surrender to law enforcement.

If Higgins were to chair the committee, he would keep the chairmanship in Freedom Caucus hands after Green’s departure.

The others named were Rep. Andrew Garbarino of New York, Michael Guest of Mississippi and Carlos Gimenez of Florida.

Should Higgins find his way to the chair of the Homeland Security Committee, it would make three of Louisiana’s six congressmen who’d have leadership positions or committee chairmanships. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise are the two most powerful men in the House of Representatives, and Higgins would then be chairing one of the most importsant committees on Capitol Hill.

Higgins is in his ninth year as a member of Congress since winning an upset victory over Scott Angelle back in 2016.
