Quote of the Day, August 10. 2026

“The cooking is done enough now. Turn the meat and eat, for the property of the Church which thou seekest hath been garnered up in heaven by the hands of the poor.” St Laurence of Rome, deacon and martyr, whilst being burned alive on a gridiron during the persecution of Emperor Valerian in AD 258, as rendered in the traditional Second Vespers for his August 10 feast. Laurence had distributed the Church’s goods among the poor rather than surrender them to the Roman authorities.
