(By Ian Robinson/The Center Square) – Louisiana voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to lower tax bills for homeowners 65 and older while reducing revenue for local governments.
Proposed Constitutional Amendment 6 would allow homeowners 65 and older who qualify for the state’s income-based property tax assessment freeze to receive property tax exemption of up to $30,000 in assessed value, depending on their age.
Under the proposal, homeowners ages 65 to 68 would qualify for an additional $6,000 exemption in assessed property value, increasing to $12,000 for ages 69 to 72, $18,000 for ages 73 to 76 and $24,000 for ages 77 to 80.
Homeowners 81 and older would qualify for the maximum $30,000 exemption.
The current law states homeowners can receive a homestead exemption on the first $7,500 of their property’s assessed value, which is equivalent to $75,000 in market value for most homes.
A “yes” vote would authorize the additional exemptions. A “no” vote would keep the existing property tax exemption.
If approved, the amendment would take effect Jan. 1, 2028.
