UPDATE: Bye, Kelly…
Southern University law professor Kelly Carmena was suspended Friday over comments she reportedly made on social media in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death, the WAFB I-Team confirmed.
The university states that it is now proceeding to terminate her employment as an investigation into her conduct commences.
In a post shared with WAFB, Carmena allegedly said, “I will 1000% wish death on people like him. He is the epitome of evil, and I have no compassion, not even a minute ounce of it for people like him who go around spewing hate the way he does.”
Southern University Board Chairman Tony Clayton confirmed the investigation.
“She has been suspended effective immediately based on the cause that she participated in conduct that was prejudicial to the university,” Clayton said. “The school will investigate this matter to finalize terminating her from the university.”
Clayton said that there is no room for what he believes to be hate speech.
“Distasteful statements should not be tolerated particularly as it relates to death. That is tantamount to participating and inciting violence and spewing hate,” Clayton said. “That conduct will not be tolerated at Southern University period.”
ORIGINAL: Kudos to Libs of TikTok for digging this one up – it appears there is a law professor at Southern University who joined the disgusting parade of progressive academics and others reveling in the murder of Charlie Kirk this week.
Kelly Carmena, a Criminal Law Professor at @SouthernULaw, reportedly made posts on Facebook WISHING for the death of Charlie Kirk moments after he was shot.
This person teaches LAW at a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY.
We reached out to @SouthernULaw for comment, but they did not respond. pic.twitter.com/5G32pFrjf7

It’s pretty low-down stuff when you’re hoping that somebody who was just shot in front of the entire nation will die of his wounds. Even within the context of political hatred, that’s awfully ugly.
So who is this woman? From her LinkedIn…
Since receiving her law license in 2009, Kelly has practiced criminal defense with the East Baton Rouge Parish Office of Public Defender as a misdemeanor and felony Assistant Public Defender as well as for Southern University Law Center’s Criminal Clinic as the Supervising Attorney/Assistant Professor. Throughout her course of practice, she has handle a multitude of criminal cases, including Second Degree Murder, Aggravated and Forcible Rape, Distribution Charges, and many more. Prior to working as an attorney with the Public Defender’s Office, Kelly had the opportunity to work with Hillar Moore, III as a legal assistant and with the law firm Moore, Walter, Thomas, Thompson, Papillion, and Cullens, LLC as a receptionist. Her experience with both helped her succeed in law school and prepared her for the actual practice of law. She received her law degree from Southern University Law Center in 2009 where she attended school while working full time. Kelly received her bachelors from Louisiana State University where she double majored in English Literature and Women’s and Gender Studies. She attended high school at Lakeside High School in Lake Village, Arkansas.
Kelly’s primary practice area is criminal defense; however, she also handles simple divorces, adoptions, and other family matters.
And from the only review of her at RateMyProfessor…
Professor Carmena taught Professional Responsibility. She is an excellent instructor and well-respected attorney. She is a Disney fanatic, so do not be distracted by her Disney themed ears that she wears to EVERY class. She is direct and her exam mirrors her class discussions and material.
And the Facebook page is… unsurprising.
It seems more than a little off to think that Southern allows a law professor to teach professional responsibility wearing Mickey Mouse ears on her head. But it’s pretty on-brand for somebody with such terrible judgment that they’d take to Facebook to wish for a famous man’s death after he’s shot.
This is not a serious person. Not a particularly stable person either.
And this is apparently what the Women’s and Gender Studies program at LSU produces, so we can perhaps re-evaluate whether that’s a quality use of our tax dollars.
So where does this leave us?
Well, we shouldn’t have people who volunteer heinous and murderous thoughts about total strangers on social media shaping the next generation of professionals in Louisiana. Not with our tax dollars.
So Kelly Carmena probably ought to go back to the public defender’s office and let’s let somebody else see if they can behave themselves while teaching criminal law and professional responsibility at Southern.
And if Southern won’t do what needs to be done, well, perhaps we don’t really need a fourth law school in the state. It isn’t like the bar passage rate from Southern Law School is particularly salutary, and it isn’t like we’re desperate for more lawyers in Louisiana.
The days of just grinning and bearing this sort of behavior from the Left are over. They ended for good on Wednesday when Kelly Carmena got what she wanted. And now it’s time for her to find out what that means.
Fire her. Now. Or Southern should lose its law school.
