The largest mistake made by USL was to go “big time” with its football program. They were barely competitive with the likes of McNeese, SLU, NSU, NLU, LaTech & Arkansas State in their old conference when they made the leap. LaTech had the only consistency to even attempt to compete at a higher level.

So many of my Lafayette friends, and a lot of family, had a lot of fun with the change from USL to “U La La”

Who cares? It’s unlikely he’ll survive four years. USL can’t win in the Sun Belt.

It’s time for the state to stop funding the athletic programs at regional universities. Student fees, ticket sales, corporate sponsorships and private donations ought to be enough to keep them afloat; if not, it’s time for them to do what UNO did.

I remember having a conversation with a few people involved in athletic money raising for UL-Lafayette. The topic of student fees came up, and basically, was explained to me that the University of Louisiana system restricts the amount student fees can be increased for athletics.

I was told the Southern and LSU systems don’t have such restrictions. Not sure that is accurate, just going off of someone more involved and informed in that process than I am.

When it was SLI, it was a national powerhouse in college boxing.
