Representatives ready to vie for Hebert’s seat

Two state representatives said Tuesday they are interested in filling Troy Hebert’s former Acadiana seat in the state Senate.

State Reps. Simone Champagne, R-Jeanerette, and Fred Mills, D-St. Martinville, said they would sign up during qualifying Dec. 15-17.

A special election will be held Jan. 22 to fill the vacancy left when Hebert, No Party-Jeanerette, resigned to become Gov. Bobby Jindal’s commissioner of Alcohol and Tobacco Control. A runoff, if necessary, would be Feb. 19.

  1. Conservative Cajun says:

Even before switching to Republican a few months ago, Simone Champagne, as a Democrat, was more conservative, especially fiscally, than most of the Senate Republicans.

Electing her to Hebert’s seat would at least bring some fiscal conservatism to the State Senate.
