Two enter race for Senate

Two candidates put up their money and signed on the dotted line in the first hour of the qualifying period for the race to fill the state Senate seat vacated by Troy Hebert, who was appointed commissioner of Alcohol and Tobacco Control last month.

State Reps. Simone Champagne and Fred Mills, both Republicans after a party switch earlier this week by Mills and in June by Champagne, are the first to qualify for the race. The special election has been called Jan. 22 with a runoff, if necessary, on Feb. 19.

via News : Now qualified (New Iberia, LA).

Do some fact checking on OpenSecrets.org and see how much “change and growth” Fred Mills has supported.  He has donated money to the likes of Cedric Richmond, Don Cazayoux and Don Cravins, Jr.  You can’t get much more left of left than with a politician like Richmond.  Is this what we want representing District 22 in Baton Rouge?

Aww, come on. How can you take shots at a guy who makes commercials as entertaining as T-Fred does?

I don’t think Fred is using his latex gloves when he’s filling those Rxs and those drugs have been absorbed through his skin.

Just because someone is a former Dem does not mean they are RINOs. Especially in LA, there is not much difference between white Democrats and Republicans at the state level. Champagne and Mills were both to the right of some Republicans in their time in the house.
In this campaign, I will be supporting Champage. She joined us before she was looking to run for higher office and before the shellacking Dems received nationwide and especially in the South. Mills waits until after a disastrous election for Democrats and the day before he files to run for a senate seat, after donating to Cedric Richmond. Sorry, but Mills switch reeks of opportunism.

Actually, in a way they’re both coming home: Mills was just slightly below the average ideology/reformism score for all House Republicans over the past three years, and Champagne was above it. Both voted much more conservative/reform than the typical House Democrat. See http://jeffsadow.blogspot.com/2010/12/another-switch-confirms-homing-in-for.html.
