UPDATE #2: Richard Fernandez at PJ Media has perhaps the best description of the Lubitz horror on offer, without any discussion of Islam…
Sometimes people do things that nobody else can understand. Sometimes they even do things that are contrary to their rational interest. The underlying premise of the A320 security model was enlightened self-interest. Because the pilot shared the fate of the plane and all its passengers it was assumed that he would do nothing to harm the collective platform.
But once upon a time men knew that self-interest was not always a true shield. What Milton called “the unconquerable will” often trumped it; demanding it should be obeyed, even when destruction is the result. The name given to this unquenchable selfishness used to be evil. There is a strange moment in the New Testament when the disciples marvel at Christ’s ability to cast out demons and He responds by recalling a memory from an eon past. “It was a little before your time,” He told his followers, “but Satan and I have fought before.”
The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.”
Christ’s reminiscence is one of the spookiest moments in the New Testment. He knew evil of old. We, on the other hand, have forgotten it, or deny it exists. Lufthansa thought it could make its planes safer through layers of screening and automated processes, but it failed to defend against the oldest enemy of all: the insistent will. To guard against this old enemy — which civilization remembered until recently — systems of checks and balances were built into critical systems to ensure that no single individual will could unilaterally control them. “Per US Air Force Instruction (AFI) 91-104, ‘The Two-Person Concept‘ is designed to prevent accidental or malicious launch of nuclear weapons by a single individual.”
UPDATE: The UK Daily Mail reports the investigation might be turning away from an ideological/religious motive behind the Germanwings Flight 9525 downing…
The co-pilot who crashed his plane into a mountain killing himself and 149 people hid a secret illness from his employers, German prosecutors have revealed.
Andreas Lubitz locked the captain out of the of the Airbus A320’s cockpit before setting the plane’s controls to descend into a rocky valley, it emerged yesterday.
Following a search of Lubitz’s Dusseldorf apartment, investigators today revealed they had found old torn-up sick leave notes, current ones and one issued for the day of the disaster.
Prosecutors said the finds indicate 28-year-old Lubitz may have had a medical condition which he kept secret from his employers, budget airline Germanwings. They said have found no suicide note or claim of responsibility and no evidence of a political or religious motivation.
Prosecutor’s spokesman Ralf Herrenbrueck said in a written statement that torn-up sick notes for the day of the crash ‘support the current preliminary assessment that the deceased hid his illness from his employer and colleagues’.
Such sick notes from doctors excusing employees from work are common in Germany and issued even for minor illnesses. Mr Herrenbrueck didn’t say details of what illness Lubitz was suffering from.
Mr Herrenbrueck said other medical documents found indicated ‘an existing illness and appropriate medical treatment’. Germanwings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, refused to comment on the new information.
They’re saying Lubitz was basically stark-raving nuts, and yet the airline didn’t pull him out of the cockpit. One wonders why the flight crews he worked with didn’t notice something.
It’s still a little strange that someone could be so cracked as to fly a plane into a mountain with 150 souls on board and not have some “higher” motivation in mind, and his boss at work didn’t know anything.
This will be a lawsuit for the ages if it turns out Lubitz was just a nutjob.
ORIGINAL: We can’t confirm any of this, and frankly the fact that the cockpit voice recorder doesn’t apparently have the co-pilot letting out an “Allahu Akbar” before he slammed that plane into that mountain makes an obvious suspicion a bit less obvious.
That said, would anybody be surprised to find out that Andreas Lubitz converted to Islam and then took the opportunity to kill all those infidels on Tuesday?

According to Michael Mannheimer, a writer for German PI-News, Germany now has its own 9/11, thanks to the convert to Islam, Andreas Lubitz.
Translation from German:
All evidence indicates that the copilot of Airbus machine in his six-months break during his training as a pilot in Germanwings, converted to Islam and subsequently either by the order of “radical”, ie. devout Muslims , or received the order from the book of terror, the Quran, on his own accord decided to carry out this mass murder. As a radical mosque in Bremen is in the center of the investigation, in which the convert was staying often, it can be assumed that he – as Mohammed Atta, in the attack against New York – received his instructions directly from the immediate vicinity of the mosque.
Converts are the most important weapon of Islam. Because their resume do not suggests that they often are particularly violent Muslims. Thus Germany now has its own 9/11, but in a reduced form. And so it is clear that Islam is a terrorist organization that are in accordance with §129a of the Criminal Code to prohibit it and to investigate its followers. But nothing will happen. One can bet that the apologists (media, politics, “Islamic Scholars”) will agree to assign this an act of a “mentally unstable” man, and you can bet that now, once again the mantra of how supposedly peaceful Islam is will continue. And worse still, the attacks by the left against those who have always warned against Islam, will be angrier and merciless.
For now the German Islam supporters like never before have their backs against the wall.

There is other stuff out there which indicates the wheels are turning in the investigation of Lubitz. For example, the UK Daily Mail has a story about an evidentiary find at Lubitz’ residence…
Police investigating the Germanwings crash said tonight they had made a ‘significant discovery’ at the home of pilot Andreas Lubitz, who deliberately ploughed the Airbus A320 into the French Alps.
Officers refused to reveal details of the potential breakthrough but said it was not a suicide note.
Speaking outside the flat on the outskirts of Dusseldorf, police said they had ‘found something’ that would now be taken for tests, adding it may be a ‘clue’ as to what happened to the doomed jet.
German detectives were also pictured carrying evidence from a £400,000 home in Montabaur, a town 40 miles from Bonn, that Lubitz is believed to have shared with his parents.
That doesn’t mean the cops walked out of his house with a Nicholas Brody-style Muslim treasure trove or a video confession, but it’s certainly conceivable that had they found such material the police would call it a “significant discovery.”
There was also something on Facebook, which might or might not be instructive. Somebody could have known Lubitz was a Muslim jihadist, or merely ascribed it to him to get attention…
More as it comes in. We wouldn’t be surprised either way this goes.
