BREAKING: New Orleans Police Officer Injured In Fatal Gentilly Area Shooting

A New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) officer has been confirmed injured in a Gentilly area shooting that has left at least one unidentified male dead.

A man who was near the scene of the incident near Hamburg and Caton said he heard about 20 gunshots, according to NOLA.com’s Heather Nolan.

Apparently the officer has not been injured with a bullet wound, but rather shrapnel from shattered glass, according to the Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police.

The suspect, according to NOPD Police Chief said suspect may have had an AK-47 and drove away in a white luxury car with a driver. NOPD said they are currently searching for the suspects.

The NOPD officer responded to a report of gunshots nearby while working detail in the area. A bullet apparently came through the windshield and shrapnel from the glass injured the officer.

During a press conference recently, Mayor Mitch Landrieu confirmed that an officer was injured in the line of duty. Landrieu said he was leaving immediately after the press conference to go to the hospital to visit the NOPD officer.

This is the third NOPD officer in recent months to be injured during an incident. Back in June, an officer was shot and killed while sitting in his police vehicle. And in July, an officer was killed after being shot at by a suspect in the back of a patrol.
