Beware The Cucumber

If you happened to make the mistake of getting on I-10 in Baton Rouge going west today, our sympathies are with you.

Wanna know why you were stuck in traffic forever?

Cucumbers. Lots of ’em.

Major delays have jammed traffic on both sides of I-10 for much of the day Sunday. State Police said around 10 a.m. Sunday morning, an 18-wheeler carrying cucumbers was involved in an accident on the eastbound side of I-10 between Grosse Tete and Port Allen.

Officials are still in the process of offloading the cucumbers onto another truck, which is expected to last until around 8 p.m. The delays are currently stretched for miles onto the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge toward Lafayette.

The westbound rubbernecking delays stretch past the 10/12 split in Baton Rouge.

State Police said the Sunday after Thanksgiving is always a very busy travel day anyway, and this accident has made it even worse. Other minor accidents have also been reported within the delays.

Police say there were moderate injuries reported in the initial crash with the 18-wheeler.

At least the roadway will have a crisp, clean smell when it’s all said and done. But I’m not sure how excited I’d be to find roadkill cucumbers in the fresh vegetable aisle at the grocery store.

Anyway, that’s what happened to your Sunday drive.
