Pelican Institute Announces Inaugural Policy Orientation for the Louisiana Legislature

Orientation will educate legislators, public on challenges to be addressed in upcoming Legislative Session

Today, the Pelican Institute for Public Policy announced its inaugural Policy Orientation for the Louisiana Legislature.  The Policy Orientation will take place on Monday, December 12 at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center located in downtown Baton Rouge.

“This orientation is the first of its kind here in Louisiana.  It will serve as a forum for legislators – both new and old – and members of the community with an interest in affecting state policy through education on the issues,” explained Kevin Kane, president of the Pelican Institute.  “We’ve identified the most relevant issues affecting our state and assembled the leaders in those specific fields who can provide the best insight for our state’s decision makers.”

While the event targets Louisiana’s state legislators, one does not have to be a legislator to register for and participate in the Policy Orientation.

Panels will focus on reform in the areas of pension, litigation, criminal justice, juvenile justice, K-12 and higher education.  Also on the agenda are panel discussions on policies in health care, telecommunications, and the energy and natural gas industries.  The panels are comprised of state and local officials, and experts from organizations such as Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI), Louisiana Oil and Gas Association (LOGA), and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

“Despite this being Louisiana’s first Policy Orientation, we’ve had incredible interest across the board from our state’s policy leaders,” Kane added.  “We’re looking forward to learning from and sharing ideas with folks such as Congressman Bill Cassidy, Public Service Commissioner Jimmy Field, Senator Conrad Appel, Representative Steve Carter and many others.  Rounding out our panels are great minds from LABI, LOGA, and ALEC.”

“I commend the Pelican Institute for bringing together legislators, subject matter experts and interested citizens to discuss key issues before the legislative session and new term in Louisiana’s state government,” said Congressman Bill Cassidy (R-Baton Rouge).  “By identifying and understanding the key issues early in the game, those who participate will be better prepared to address those issues and make informed decisions for the people of Louisiana.

Keynote speakers will include:

–        Opening address – Senator David Vitter
–        VIP luncheon – President of Americans for Tax Reform, Grover Norquist
–        Closing address – Governor Bobby Jindal (invited)

Registered guests will have access to the opening keynote address, panels and closing happy hour.  VIP guests may attend all keynote addresses and panels; a VIP luncheon featuring Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform; closing happy hour and special access to speakers and panelists.

Early Registration ($45) and Early VIP Registration ($145) for the Policy Orientation is available online at www.louisianapolicy.org/register.  Early Registration and Early VIP Registration end November 30.  After November 30, ticket prices will increase.
