The Blunt Amendment, which was a GOP-led attempt to allow religious institutions and others the ability to opt out of the Obamacare contraceptive mandate, was tabled on a more-or-less party-line 51-48 vote.
Sen. Mark Kirk, a Republican from Illinois who suffered a stroke two weeks ago and is out of commission, did not vote. Democrats Bob Casey (PA) and Joe Manchin (WV) voted against tabling the amendment.
Mary Landrieu (D-LA) voted to table it. Party affiliation apparently trumps religious freedom for Landrieu.
Before the vote, Sen. David Vitter spoke passionately on the Blunt Amendment’s behalf.
