New Orleans City Council’s LaToya Cantrell Just Made Some Pretty Defamatory Remarks About The NOPD

New Orleans Democrat City Councilwoman LaToya Cantrell, who is now known for her proposed smoking ban on the city, recently made some pretty defamatory comments about the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), in which she makes specific situational claims that officers have apparently been a part of.

Now, do not get us wrong. There have long been issues with the NOPD, as the most recent audit on the agency clearly points out. However, what Cantrell does is make claims without citing the audit or even mentioning the word “alleged,” as the investigation into the NOPD is still ongoing.

This is what Cantrell said:

“But when babies who are infected are turned back to their parents, the people that they come from with STI’s. When women are told that when they know the man, that it ‘doesn’t count,’ so let’s talk about improvement and I know for a fact that this council will continue to be for increased wages,” Cantrell admonished.

But, the Fraternal Order of Police’s Jim Gallagher was not having any of Cantrell’s malicious remarks.

“That’s an ongoing investigation. You’ve just tarnished 1,075 men with the actions, potentially, of a few!” Gallagher shot back. “Shame on you!”

“Shame on you!” retorted Cantrell as council president Stacy Head called for order.

What does the NOPD or the people of New Orleans benefit from when their councilwoman is trashing the city police department and making accusations? Not much, we can imagine, except just more anger towards police officers in general.

You can even listen to the exchange here via audio.
