Are Tourists Safe In New Orleans? Well, Not Exactly

Remember when Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans said this: “If you are a tourist coming into town … and you’re coming to my city and you want to come enjoy it, you’re as safe in my city as any place in the world.”

Well, Landrieu might be eating his words.

On labor day, two female tourists were held up at gunpoint by a thief while walking through the Garden District admiring the homes near Philip and Camp streets.

Then, last night in the French Quarter, a high tourist area, a shooting broke out around 2 a.m. in the 600 block of Iberville Street, close to Canal Street and the New Orleans Marriott Hotel.

The shooting left a 35 year-old man dead at the scene. Another man was hit with a bullet in the torso, while a third man had a bullet graze his leg. Both men are recovering in the hospital.

These latest crime reports are exactly contrary to Landrieu’s assertion months ago that New Orleans crime is only a problem if you’re “a young African-American man, and you have had a problem getting a job, and you’ve had some interaction with the criminal justice system.”

That’s just not the case.
