This happened in Tultepec, which is a town a bit north of Mexico City, and apparently one of the big industries there – if not the biggest industry – is the manufacture of fireworks.
It turns out there’s a large fireworks market in Tultepec called the San Pablito market, and it also turns out something there caught on fire which should not have, and…well, this happened.
Someone then had the idea of flying a drone over the carnage…
The effect of all this was really atrocious. 31 people died, more than 70 more were injured. One wonders about the efficacy of having a whole bazaar of just fireworks stores set up in close proximity to one another like this…
It obviously doesn’t look like that anymore. Not exactly the smartest exhibit of urban planning available, but then again, this is Mexico we’re talking about.
