If last night’s Nevada mass shooting wasn’t enough of a punch in the gut, a Lafayette cop was killed by a scumbag with a death wish Sunday night too.

Louisiana State Police Troop I is reporting the unnamed officer was killed after the Lafayette Police Department got information about a possible shooting and aggravated battery at Big Boy’s convenience store near Moss Street and Van Buren Drive.

After the officer entered the store, all hell broke loose and he was killed in a shootout with an unnamed suspect. The suspect fled on foot and he was captured by LPD shortly after. There were also two other people who took gunshots, but they were taken to the hospital and appear to be doing alright.

It’s also an unsettling tidbit that the officer’s death occurred at almost exactly the same time as hundred of people getting shot in Nevada: 10 p.m.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, this will be the fourth Louisiana cop killed by gunfire this year. Unlike the Nevada shootings-which the left is already trying to politicize-this will hopefully be a case where we can all show respect for the dead and the badge.

UPDATE: The killer has been identified…

Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations identified the shooter as 28-year-old Ian Paul Howard of Lafayette. Howard was arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of first-degree murder of a police officer, one count of attempted murder of a police officer, and two counts of attempted murder.
