Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Supports Impeaching President Trump

Freshman Democrat congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has announced her support for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. On Tuesday evening Ocasio-Cortez said that the released Mueller report is a clear invitation for Congress to impeach Trump.

From the Washington Times:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday that the special counsel’s report is a clear invitation to Congress to impeach President Trump — and she’s climbing on board the effort.

The New York Democrat took to Twitter to say she considers herself a reluctant impeachment warrior, “but the report squarely puts this on our doorstep.”

“As such, I’ll be signing onto @RashidaTlaib’s impeachment resolution,” she said, referring to her fellow freshman congresswoman.

Impeachment takes only a majority vote in the House, where Democrats control matters. The articles of impeachment are then tried in the Senate, where it takes a two-thirds vote to convict and remove the president.

Ocasio-Cortez has in many ways become the intellectual leader of the Democratic Party since her election last November. She is the leading architect of the Green New Deal, which seeks to fundamentally alter the foundation of the American economy in order to fight “climate change.” The Green New Deal has been embraced by every Democrat running for the president so far.

She has also called for raising taxes to 70% in order to fund her Green New Deal. That proposal has been embraced by many of the Democrats running for president.

Now that Ocasio-Cortez is joining the impeachment bandwagon, we will likely see many Democrats jump on board in order to prove their progressive credentials. Will this help Democrats when it comes to election time? Unlikely.

Even if somehow a majority of the U.S. House votes to impeach Trump, impeachment is likely dead on arrival in the U.S. Senate. It is unlikely that a majority of the Senate, let alone the two-thirds required to convict and remove the president, will actually remove Trump from office.

Even if Trump is removed from office, Vice President Mike Pence will step into the White House and he has none of Trump’s vices. It’s hard to see Democrats defeating Pence if he is the president.

But Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has joined the impeachment crusade, which means Democrats will surely have to try and impeach Trump. The progressive base will demand it, despite the Mueller report.
