So Appropriations is 16 Republicans, eight Democrats and one independent, while Ways and Means is 13 Republicans and five Democrats.

Zeringue as chair of Appropriations can be seen as an indication of how much sway Speaker Pro Tem Tanner Magee holds, as the two are allies and both come from the Houma area. There had been some discussion that Schexnayder actually wanted Rep. Jack McFarland, who was a supporter of

We’ve heard some grumbling that there aren’t enough conservatives on the money committees. That’s probably a nit-picky complaint, though it is a bit disappointing that Rep. Beryl Amedee was left off Appropriations. Beryl is one of the people who will actually dig into the muck of the state budget and ask the tough questions, and it’s an oversight not to put her on the committee.

Nevertheless, it would be fairly difficult for an overly-bloated budget to make it out of that Appropriations Committee as currently constructed, and almost impossible for tax increases to come out of that Ways and Means Committee. There isn’t much reason for anyone on the Right to complain about these assignments, on the whole.

We had heard the rest of the committees would be announced today, but we aren’t really expecting that.
