KOENIG: Who Will Save New Orleans?

Times have been tough for New Orleans in the past few years. Ever since LaToya Cantrell became the city’s mayor in 2018, the Big Easy has undergone a rapid decline in numerous ways—from rampant crime to unimpeded homelessness and continued poor infrastructure to a lack of economic development. The list of issues facing New Orleans goes on and on.

At the beginning of 2023, there was a glimmer of hope for some change in New Orleans’ inept political leadership. The recall effort to oust Mayor LaToya Cantrell gave many New Orleans residents the hope that the city might “turn the corner.” Alas, that hope was shot down when the Recall effort fell short of its goal in March 2023.

Since the failed recall, a sense of apathy has overshadowed the hard-working, law-abiding patriots in the metro New Orleans area. The decline of this once great American city feels permanent to many New Orleans residents. No one really knows what to do.

Fortunately, New Orleans residents have a chance to “right the ship” in New Orleans. However, this path to victory does not lie in New Orleans City Hall or the Mayor’s Office. Conservatives in South Louisiana have little chance to change those political offices anytime soon.

So, what can Conservative folks in the New Orleans area do right now? What can you do to save the flagship city of Louisiana?

The answer: elect a proven conservative and fighter for the people of Louisiana as the next governor of Louisiana. Louisiana needs a conservative governor who will tackle crime and promote law-and-order.

According to Louisiana’s State Constitution, here is a description of the governor’s powers: “The governor shall be commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the state, except when they are called into service of the federal government.  He may call out these forces to preserve law and order, to suppress insurrection, to repel invasion, or in other times of emergency.”

Preserving Law-and-order! The current Mayor and District Attorney of New Orleans have utterly failed to enforce the laws of this great state. In fact, New Orleans became the murder capital of the country in 2022.

The current status quo of rampant crime in New Orleans is unacceptable and must end soon. The next Governor must take drastic measures to save New Orleans from the crime in the city—whether that be through deploying the national guard or sending in State Police officers to the patrol New Orleans. The current corrupt political leadership in New Orleans will not take the steps to stopping crime in New Orleans, so our next Governor must have the political will to preserve law and order in New Orleans.

Similarly, Louisiana’s next Governor must consider suspending elected officials who are not enforcing the Louisiana Constitution and the state’s laws. Back in 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended an elected Florida prosecutor who deliberately evaded to enforce the state’s anti-abortion laws. Similarly in Missouri, the Missouri State House proposed legislation to allow its Governor to appoint a replacement special prosecutor in high-crime counties—which caused the Far-Left Circuit prosecutor of St Louis to resign. The State Legislature should consider giving Louisiana’s Governor similar power to do the same concerning New Orleans.

Now, who should become Louisiana’s next Governor?

Personally, I believe that Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry is the right man for the job, and conservative voters should consider helping Landry become the next governor of Louisiana. But there are others in the race who might also prove to be solid conservative choices.

What I like about Landry is his willingness to fight.

Just think back to the past few years. Can you name any other Louisiana politician who has done more to save New Orleans from Cantrell’s poor leadership and the many issues plaguing the city?

Who pushed Mayor Cantrell to end the COVID-19 lockdowns and mandates in early 2022? Jeff Landry. Who has worked to keep New Orleans safer by his efforts to end the NOPD’s Consent decree? Jeff Landry. Who worked to compel New Orleans’s political leaders to enforce Louisiana’s pro-life laws back in 2022? Jeff Landry.

Nevertheless, Louisiana cannot afford to elect a John Bel Edwards acolyte as the next Governor. That situation remains as a worst-case scenario for both Louisiana and New Orleans.

In closing, whether it’s Landry or somebody else, the next governor of Louisiana is the only man who can save New Orleans from continuing its spiral into a third-world dumpster fire. Therefore, every single conservative voter in the Greater New Orleans area must help elect a principled fighter to the Governor’s mansion this fall!
