The Education Of Jason Williams?

We’re late to this one thanks to having a whole lot of other things on the plate, but just in case you didn’t hear about it, try not to laugh over New Orleans’ Soros DA Jason Williams getting carjacked on Monday

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams and his mother were the victims of a carjacking in the city Monday, according to a spokesman for his office.

Williams and his 78-year-old mother were carjacked at gunpoint Monday evening while he helped her to her car.

It happened shortly after 10:00 p.m. Monday in the 1000 block of Race Street in the Lower Garden District according to NOPD.

WWL-TV’s Paul Murphy obtained nearby security camera footage of the carjacking as it happened. While the incident happened just out of sight of the camera, Williams could be heard saying ‘Get out the car momma. Let me get my momma out of the car.’

“This tells you that this can happen to anybody. Nobody is immune from crime. Nobody is immune from all sorts of crime,” DA Williams said in a WWL-TV Exclusive interview.

“Right now, I’m just glad to still be in the land of the living. I’m glad that nobody squeezed the trigger last night. I’m glad that my mother was able to get out of that car and that she’s okay.”

Really, don’t laugh. And don’t do like I did, which was to make jokes about how New Orleans actually does, in fact, offer excellent educational opportunities to the public. Because that was very rude of me.

The good news is that Williams’ attacker, it’s believed, was caught

An 18-year-old has been arrested in connection to the Monday night carjacking of New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Raymond Rochon was also arrested in connection to another carjacking that happened a half-hour later the same night.

He is facing multiple charges including auto theft and illegal possession of a stolen vehicle.

Around 10 p.m. on Monday, Williams says he was getting ready to drive his mother home. He assisted her into the passenger seat and then started walking toward the driver’s side of his SUV.

“Two masked individuals got out, brandishing automatic handguns, pointed them at my head and told me to give up the car,” Williams recounted. “I put my hands in the air, attempted to comply, but I was very clear that I could not give up the car until I got my mother out of the car.”

Williams was able to get his mother out of his car despite the repeated demands from the two suspects. They then drove off, and Williams called 911.

The arrest is great, except that isn’t such fantastic news once the details come out

Less than 24 hours after the high-profile carjacking of New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams and his 78-year-old mother, police arrested an 18-year-old in connection with the armed heist. Following his arrest late Tuesday afternoon, Raymond Rochon also was booked in three prior auto thefts for which arrest warrants had been issued.

Late Wednesday afternoon, a New Orleans magistrate found probable cause to hold Rochon on criminal charges and set his bond at $120,000.

Rochon’s attorney Michael Kennedy argued for a lower amount.

“Now obviously we all know what my client is actually accused of which perhaps was not the charge on the docket before the court today, but I’m sure there was no way that was not taken into consideration,” Kennedy said.

According to court documents, Rochon was picked up near his home in the 7600 block of Brevard Street on Tuesday, in the Little Woods neighborhood.

Police say they tracked a stolen Dodge pickup truck, allegedly used in the carjacking, to Rochon’s home.

Court documents indicate, as officers were reading Rochon his rights, he interrupted and said, “I know why y’all are here…y’all’s people had been got,” a reference to DA Williams.

All told, this kid had seven outstanding warrants on him. And nobody bothered to pick him up when it doesn’t appear to have been much of a secret where his crib was.

Until he carjacked the DA, that is.

Here’s a quote, and you can judge for yourself whether it’s indicative of an epiphany on Jason Williams’ part…

“We live here,” Williams said. “We are citizens here. We want New Orleans to be safe. We always, we want the police to win. We want the police to catch the people who are making us unsafe.”

Yeah, OK. So how come this menace to society was roaming free on the city’s streets, carjacking at his leisure until he made the mistake of doing the deed to a member of the ruling class?

That ruling class has a lot to answer for in New Orleans. It’s an abject, pitiful failure on lots of fronts, not just that of maintaining the rule of law.

But you shouldn’t laugh that Williams’ coddling of criminals came back to bite him on Monday. You should perhaps instead hope this finally brings him around to the idea that doing his job and putting criminals in jail for victimizing common folks rather than the city’s elite is what he’s here for.

We have our doubts.
