KOENIG: Could We See a Secretary Brumley in the Trump Administration?

We are almost two weeks out from the US presidential election. Regardless of the election’s winner, the next President will have only a couple of months to staff the entire executive branch.

One of the highest ranking positions in the entire executive branch is the Secretary of the US Department of Education. This Department holds sway over roughly $80 billion dollars in discretionary funds and sets the tone for American educational policy.

Yesterday, a leading national education news outlet Education Week published an article about the leading contenders for Education Secretary under a potential Trump administration. One of the candidates for this cabinet-level position is Louisiana’s very own State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley:

Brumley’s name also surfaces as a possible Trump education secretary in conversations with Republicans in Washington who work on education policy.

During his four-year tenure in Louisiana, he’s pushed for what he describes as a “back to basics” approach to education, focusing on math, reading, and science rather than cultural issues, and for expanding school choice.

He’s also worked to stop identifying schools for intervention based on student suspensions and to make it easier for teachers to remove disruptive students from their classrooms.

Both policies fit into Brumley’s ‘Let Teachers Teach Initiative,’ which also includes a move to streamline professional development requirements …

Without a doubt, Dr. Brumley has made waves in conservative circles for the positive impact he has made on Louisiana education. In fact, the executive director for Moms for Liberty named Dr. Brumley as her leading choice for Education Secretary if she were not selected:

In response to a question about who else she’d like to see in the position if she isn’t chosen, she named Cade Brumley, the Louisiana state superintendent of education.

Similarly, here’s what K-12 education expert Max Eden, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, had to say about Dr. Brumley:

I think he’s the most administratively effective and politically talented state superintendent on the right in America right now … And he has an extremely folksy, pleasant, positive demeanor.

In his four years as our State Superintendent, Brumley has overseen significant improvements in Louisiana’s K-12 education rankings and in educational freedom for Louisiana families. In fact, Louisiana has reached an all-time high in the US News & World Report‘s K-12 education ranking under Brumley’s leadership.

What’s more, Brumley has supported expanding school choice via educations savings accounts (ESAs), swiftly brought Louisiana students back to school during the COVID-19 pandemic, and helped revise Louisiana’s social studies curriculum to promote an accurate, patriotic view of our nation’s history. Additionally, Brumley has taken courageous stands against the Biden administration and Louisiana politicians on multiple occasions to promote the interests of Louisiana students.

Brumley’s track record over the four years has impressed Louisiana citizens. Now, national political figures are finally beginning to take notice.

Too often, presidential administrations select beltway bureaucrats and political insiders to run the executive branch. Our nation does not need more big-money donors or lifelong bureaucrats running our Federal government. Washington DC could use more patriotic leaders like Dr. Cade Brumley setting the policy priorities for America’s education.

Of course, Louisiana citizens would miss Dr. Brumley if he were to take on the role of the Secretary of the US Department of Education under Trump. Nevertheless, he certainly would make a fantastic head of the Department of Education.
