Fleming Might Be Up For A Job In The Trump Administration. What Happens Then?

You may have seen this report about Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming and his potential to return to Washington, DC…

Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming said President-elect Donald Trump’s team has contacted him about a possible appointment in the administration.

In a weekend interview with USA Today Network, Fleming said he would be interested in a “senior position” with the administration if it were offered, but that nobody on the Trump team has yet presented him with a specific job offer.

“If there is a senior position that is a good fit I would be happy to consider it, but on the other hand I have a good job as treasurer that I enjoy very much,” Fleming said. “It would have to be something substantive.”

Fleming, a former congressman from Minden who was elected treasurer in 2023, served in Trump’s previous administration from 2017 through 2020 in three appointments, concluding his service in the White House as deputy chief of staff and assistant to the president.

He said the Trump team first contacted him months ago during the campaign.

“I think they learned from the first term that you can’t just plop a man into the oval office and create policy without having dedicated troops throughout government to see it through,” said Fleming, who also served Trump in Health and Human Services and as head of the economic development administration within Commerce.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Fleming at the Department of Health and Human Services, either as the Secretary or in one of the high-up spots. He is a doctor, after all. Or he could end up in the Treasury Department. Or he could end up in the White House like he was last time.

We’d love to see him get the Commerce Secretary job. If he did we’d have somebody whose interests align with small and mid-sized businesses and not the multinational corporate oligopoly that Obama Democrats have centered our economy around over the past 16 years.

Anyway, should Fleming end up in the Trump administration, that’s going to make a hole at the Treasury Department here in Louisiana. Gov. Jeff Landry would appoint somebody to fill it, and then we’d have a special election likely this fall.

Or maybe earlier.

Rachel Kincaid is the current first assistant in Louisiana’s Treasury Department. She’s been around for a while and would be the most obvious interim treasurer.

Do we have any names of folks who might run for the job if and when that special election gets called?

It would be a no-brainer that Dustin Granger, the unhinged Democrat Fleming soundly drubbed last year, would run again. It would also be a no-brainer that Granger would get clobbered if he did.

Scott McKnight, who ran third in the primary for Treasurer last year, could make another run at the job. One wonders whether McKnight could survive having endorsed Ted James in the Baton Rouge mayor’s race this year. We’ve heard McKnight is now endorsing Sid Edwards, which would definitely help to repair some of that damage, but we haven’t seen that show up on his social media yet. McKnight can’t win a Republican primary if that endorsement of James is the last public word on the mayor’s race.

So the field would be wide open for somebody else to get in.

What about John Schroder, the former treasurer who ran for governor last year? Would Schroder want his job back?

We’ve heard Schroder was happy to move on from the job, so it would be unlikely. Still, he was a very popular treasurer, so if he wanted it he’d likely win.

There are a few legislators who might bear watching. The most obvious name is Brett Geymann, known around the Capitol as the biggest stickler of all when it comes to wasteful spending. The Treasurer isn’t really in charge of the state’s budget, though he does have a whip hand at the State Bond Commission, and Geymann would be an interesting figure in that position.

Also interesting would be Julie Emerson, the current chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. Emerson is destined for statewide office at some point soon, and this might just be her opportunity.

But it’s far too early to speculate when Fleming still has the job.

The buzz about his rejoining the Trump administration is real, though. Fleming was a major asset in the first Trump administration and he’s definitely interested in heading back to Washington to do it again.
