Amazon announces $6B data center investment in Shreveport

(Darren Svan, The Center Square) — Amazon Web Services announced the construction of a third data center campus in northwest Louisiana, increasing their investment in the region from $12 billion to $18 billion.

Their newest tech campus will be built at Resilient Technology Park in west Shreveport. Resilient is a development-ready industrial park created to attract major projects. Two additional campuses are already under construction in rural Caddo and Bossier parishes.

“What a win for the people of Shreveport,” said Mayor Tom Arceneaux at Tuesday’s announcement. “We have plenty of water. And we are confident in the conservation efforts and in our ability to deliver this water with only positive impact on the citizens of Shreveport.”

Construction of the Shreveport campus was held up due to litigation brought by three plaintiffs, with assistance from the Sierra Club Delta Chapter. The case remains in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

Amazon officials would not comment about the litigation but several local officials said the company is now comfortable with the its status and ready to announce their newest project.

The campus is expected to create 210 new direct jobs, 499 indirect new jobs, for a total of 709 potential new job opportunities, the company said.

The project developer is STACK Infrastructure. The project will support up to 2,250 construction jobs for local contractors, skilled trades and suppliers throughout the region, the company said.

“When we announced our investment in northwest Louisiana earlier this year, we made a promise: Amazon pays its own way, and the communities where we operate will be better off because we’re there,” said Keith Klein, Amazon’s director of Data Center Supply Solutions. “Increasing our planned investment to $18 billion means more good jobs for the region and more opportunities for local businesses.”

Amazon plans to invest up to $400 million in public water infrastructure to support all three campuses and has coordinated with local utilities to ensure sufficient capacity for both its facilities and existing customers. The company will fund all water and wastewater improvements required by the projects.

Amazon said it is also working with Southwestern Electric Power Company to fully fund the new energy infrastructure and grid upgrades required to serve its data centers.
