GARLINGTON: Why Good People Shun Politics

It is a well-known saying:  Good people don’t get involved in politics.  There are several reasons for this; we will look at a couple of them now.  First is the hypocrisy of many elected officials.  The following is a report from Arizona:

‘State lawmakers gave final approval Tuesday to two measures designed to promote public health — but not before exempting themselves from one of them.

‘Without dissent, the Republican-led Senate approved House Bill 2164 to eliminate certain artificial dyes and chemicals from what can be served and sold at public schools. That measure, already approved by the House, now goes to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs.

‘But HB 2165, a proposal to keep people from using their food stamps to purchase sodas, drew unanimous derision from Senate Democrats — particularly after their Republican counterparts refused to apply the same restrictions on the use of the taxpayer dollars they get in a daily allowance for their expenses while the Legislature is in session’ (Howard Fischer, ‘RFK Jr. praises Arizona legislation targeting processed foods, soda,’ tuscon.com).

Second is the petty hatred and accusations that flare up between officials, which is happening now in Louisiana:

‘When it comes to the high price of auto insurance, Governor Landry and Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple are pointing their fingers – not at the insurance companies or trial lawyers, but at one another.

‘When he announced the 20 insurance reform bills he’s supporting, Temple noted that he has not had a conversation with Landry about the issue in a long time.

‘“I have not had a conversation with the governor about insurance reform since May 7th of 2024, when we all met together in the press conference room to do the bill signing for property reform,” Temple said at a news conference in Ascension Parish. “I know there’s been other meetings that have taken place that I’ve not been part of. It’s not because I’ve said no, it’s because I wasn’t invited to be part of those.”

‘ . . . Landry issued a statement Friday on social media.

‘“At a time when Louisianans are suffering and seeking answers to their sky high insurance bills, our Insurance Commissioner (Tim Temple) hosted a media spectacle telling citizens he has all the authority he needs to fix our insurance crisis,” Landry’s statement reads. “Well, why hasn’t anything been done? He gave us a package of bills last year, yet we still have no relief.

‘“I’d remind him that we were not elected by insurance companies or trial lawyers, but instead were elected by the people who entrusted us to fix this mess,” Landry’s statement continued. “Data shows our package of bills will lower insurance rates for all Louisianans and I look forward to the day where our Insurance Commissioner can get on board”’ (Andrew Greenstein, ‘Landry, Temple in war of words over insurance reform,’ louisianaradionetwork.com).

Because of all this ugliness, the folks who want to live a virtuous Christian life, the very ones we need in government, run as far away from it as possible.  The results are easily predictable:  Leftists gain control of most of the levers of government power and force evil agendas upon the populace:

‘A bill in Colorado is making its way through the state legislature that would create legal grounds for the state to revoke custody of parents who misgender their children.

‘The bill is called the Kelly Loving Act, named after a 40-year-old transgender man killed in the Club Q mass shooting in 2022.

‘Its text states that “deadnaming, misgendering or threatening to publish material related to an individual’s gender-affirming health-care services” will be deemed “coercive control” and will influence the court “when making child custody decisions and determining the best interests of a child for purposes of parenting time”’ (Eva Terry, ‘Colorado bill could strip parents of custody for misgendering their children,’ deseret.com).

For those with knowledge of the broader plan of the satanists to overthrow Christianity, they will recognize this proposal as part of Alice Bailey’s ten goals that, once accomplished, would lead to the easy establishment of the anti-Christian, globalist, New World Order:

‘Her second point was to reduce parental authority over children.  The aim here, she admitted, is to “break the communication between parent and child.”  Bailey recognized that the Christian faith is primarily passed from one generation to the next through the family, and that to end the former the latter must be attacked.  . . .

‘Bailey’s sixth point was the establishment of homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle.  . . .  She described how this could only be achieved if it was done under the language of tolerance and acceptance with an eventual goal of destroying gender distinction’ (Father Spyridon Bailey, Orthodoxy and the Kingdom of Satan, FeedARead.com Publishing, 2017, pgs. 38, 40).

The most profoundly important time of year, Holy Week and Resurrection Sunday, is now here, as Jeff LeJeune pointed out recently here at The Hayride, and yet what a pitiful condition we are in!  Government officials by their behavior have chased many Christ-bearers (i.e., Christians) out of one of the most influential parts of human society, and demonically inspired ideologies have rushed in to fill the void created by the loss of the good leaven of the Gospel.

But, it may be asked, don’t most elected officials claim to be Christians?  That is true, but there is a difference between those who make the claim and those who actually are, between those who merely profess to be Christians for the sake of winning elections and those who really seek after the Holy Trinity with all their strength.  We are familiar enough with the phenomenon of the RINO, Republican In Name Only.  We may also speak of the CINO – Christian In Name Only.  Governments are sadly full of both.  What we want are the genuine articles:  real conservatives/revivalists, real Christians.  But as we have been saying, the RINOs and CINOs have been repelling them by their offensive lives.

If those in government are interested at all in promoting the common good, they themselves must become little Christs, practicing what the Good Lord Himself teaches by His words and by His actions.  The fruits of this will delight us, for like attracts like; virtuous men in government will attract other virtuous men to serve alongside them.

Jesus Christ came to save all mankind and to sanctify all the works of his mind and hands and heart/nous.  This includes government.

This is difficult under the current system of democratic elections, which attracts a lot of narcissistic psychopaths who lust to exercise power over others and to be the center of attention.  Perhaps this why St John of Kronstadt once declared, ‘In Heaven there is a kingdom, but in Hell there is a democracy.’  There are more ways of selecting government magistrates than one man, one vote election systems; there are also sortition, heredity, etc.

However that may be, we have the system that we have, and it is not beyond the reach of God’s Grace to be improved for the better.  This Holy Week and Easter, we earnestly hope all elected officials will make a sincere effort to put aside selfish animosity, hypocrisy, and other sins and vices and model instead the highest Christian virtues so that the Light of Christ will shine forth from them, inspiring the plain folks of the several States to seek after Christ with zeal, and to join them, if God so wills it, in serving the wider community by taking up a position in government at whatever level, be it local, State, or federal.

Such would be a fitting response this Easter season to the Gift of Life that Christ has given to us through His Death on the Cross, Three-Day Burial, Resurrection, and Glorious Ascension.
