Could The GOP Be Looking At A Pickup In The Louisiana House?

There’s a decent shot it could happen. Chad Brown, who represents House District 60 across the river from Baton Rouge, is leaving the state legislature to join the Landry administration as commissioner of the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, and Republican Brad Daigle, who’s very well-known in the district, just threw his hat into the race to replace Brown.

Shortly thereafter, the LAGOP endorsed Daigle…

The Republican Party of Louisiana is pleased to announce its endorsement of Brad Daigle for State Representative in District 60.

“Brad embodies steady leadership, strong character, and sincere commitment to public service,” LAGOP Executive Director Cory Dennis said. “Throughout his years of service on the Republican State Central Committee, Brad has demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues that matter most to our community, including economic stability, responsible government, and an improved quality of life for all residents,” Dennis said.

“Brad Daigle’s thoughtful approach to problem-solving, willingness to listen, and dedication to transparent decision-making reflect the kind of representation that the citizens of Iberville and Assumption Parishes deserve. We believe he will bring integrity, professionalism, and a forward-looking vision to the office, and we are proud to support his effort to serve our community,” Dennis said.

District 60 has been trending more conservative for decades. This represents the Republican Party’s best opportunity for increasing its margins in the Louisiana Legislature. A special election is expected to be scheduled this winter to replace Chad Brown, who recently resigned to take a position with Governor Jeff Landry’s administration.

The LAGOP Executive Committee voted unanimously to endorse Brad Daigle on November 20th.

House District 60 is pretty much Iberville Parish, and last year Iberville went 50-48 for Donald Trump over Kamala Harris. So this is a longtime Democrat district which could be about to flip to the GOP, and Daigle will probably be the only Republican in the race.

Who else will run? Speculation has it that Jerry Jackson, who’s a community organizer and a member of the Iberville Parish School Board, is the most likely Democrat. Jackson’s reputation is that he’s pretty far left for a centrist House district, so it’s a favorable race for Daigle.

The election hasn’t been called yet. Brown just took the ATC job. It’ll probably happen in February or March.
