(By Ian Robinson/The Center Square) – Louisiana voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to allow property tax breaks for owners who restore abandoned or rundown buildings across the state.
Proposed Constitutional Amendment 10 would allow local governments to offer property tax exemptions for neglected or unsafe properties that have been repaired and restored.
Current state law states blighted properties include abandoned or unsafe buildings that could pose a danger to people or nearby properties.
The proposal would allow local governments to give tax breaks to owners who fix up these properties. State legislators would decide which properties qualify and set the rules for the tax breaks.
A “yes” vote would allow property tax exemptions for qualifying properties that have been renovated.
A “no” vote would leave existing property tax rule unchanged.
