White powder prompts evacuation of Louisiana election office

(The Center Square) — The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office in Baton Rouge resumed normal operations Wednesday after an Elections Division employee opened a package containing an unidentified white powder Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. at the agency’s office on Archives Avenue, prompting a law enforcement response and the temporary closure of the building.

Officials initially said the substance had not been identified and no injuries had been reported.

Law enforcement authorities responded to the incident and conducted tests that found no evidence of harmful substances, according to an update from the Secretary of State’s Office.

The incident comes less than three weeks before Louisiana voters head to the polls for the Nov. 3 congressional elections.

Secretary Nancy Landry said her office will investigate the incident in the coming days to determine whether additional safety measures are necessary.

“In the coming days, we will review today’s incident to identify improvements we can make to help ensure the safety and well-being of our employees,” the office said in a statement.

Authorities have not indicated who sent the package or whether it was intended as a threat.
