When it comes to fishing, we all have our geographical — or I guess hydrological — biases. Maybe you really like flats or points or grass beds or drains — whatever.
For me, it’s bayous. I’m just naturally drawn to twisty, windy bayous because I love to dissect them while I’m on the water and figure out how fish are using them.
I especially like fishing new bayous — or at least bayous that are new to me — because catching fish in new water is always more exciting than doing it in water you know. Plus, you fish new water differently. You pay attention to details you ignore in water you know well.
In your usual spots, you are inclined to focus too much attention to specific features that delivered for you in the past, while ignoring those that didn’t produce, but in a new bayou, you have no biases — no preconceived notions — so you fish everything, and you pay attention to specific details.
That being the case, I’m always studying maps at home, searching for bayous that look like they should be productive. Now, I never really know until I get there and fish them. The water might be dirty, there might be no bait or no grass or the depth might not be what I expected.
But that time of discovery is a big part of the fun for me, and each fish caught in a new area is especially valuable because it provides validation of my research.

And I don’t know why this is, but it seems like my first time fishing a new bayou is always my most productive trip there — probably because I fish it much more intentionally.
